Millington the master
out a strong field at Southside to stretch his winning streak to four in the Bermuda Bicycle Association 45-mile road race.
With only two events remaining for riders to qualify for an invitation to ride in the Sinclair Packwood Memorial Road Race on Heritage Day, it was sure to be a stellar field.
On a perfect day, using a four-mile looped course incorporating all available hills, 60 riders made the start line.
With more than 20 riders together, Millington attacked on one of the hills and only Kent Richardson was able to respond.
Despite riders trying to go with them the two were soon working in unison to open up a lead and with the main pack splintering under pressure it was clear this would be the move of the day.
As the pair opened up an insurmountable lead, the chase pack, comprising of a number of different category riders, began to whittle down.
Veteran Clark Tear, Novice David Hill and Junior Matthew Herring, who had all remained in the lead group, finished their eight-lap race taking honours in their respective divisions.
This left Hopkins, Melanie Claude, Karl Outerbridge, Earl Godfrey, Jason Krupp, Jonathon Herring, Carlos DeSilva, Martin Petitt, Kevin Topple, Brian Steinhoff and Jean Nicholas Bertrand to fight for third.
An impressive ride by Millington and Richardson saw the pair work together until the end when Millington put his superior sprinting ability to good use, breaking away from his rival on the final stretch.
As he passed the finish line his time read 1:53.24, five seconds ahead of Richardson.
With half a mile in the battle for third to go, Hopkins attacked on a left hand bend, causing riders to scramble for position.
Steinhoff crashed causing Topple and DeSilva to lose places and in a final fight to the line impressive sprinter Bertrand blasted past a fading Hopkins with Petitt and Claude tight on his wheel and finishing in that order.
In other categories, Wenda Godfrey, making her second appearance of the season, won the womens five-lap race, while Veteran Maria Duffy won her category.
Tyler Scott won the boys 13 to 14 group, Melissa DeSilva the Girls 15 to 16, Flora Duffy the Girls 13 to 14 four lap event and Tim Fox the Boys 11 to 12.
Alison Bolton won the three lap event for Girls aged 11 to 12 and Mark Smith was the top boy in the under-10 category.
Sunday will see the final qualifying event before the prestigious Heritage Day Road Race.
