Minors reaches elusive milestone

striker Ian Wright.

On the same day that Wright scored his 100th goal in an Arsenal jersey -- thousands of miles away and leagues apart -- Minors was also reaching the century mark with two goals in Spinning Wheel's season opener against newly-promoted Lobster Pot which gave him 100 league and cup goals in the Commercial League.

And like Wright, Minors reached his milestone in a losing cause as Spinning Wheel, leading 3-0 at one stage in the first half, went on to lose the contest 5-4 after a last minute penalty miss from new signing Wendell (Pop) Simons robbed Wheel of a point.

Simons' effort was saved by the diving 'keeper as Lobster Pot hung on to complete a brilliant fight-back which saw them pull back to 3-2 by the half and then come back again in the second half when Wheel had regained a two-goal cushion at 4-2. Keith Bell scored the other two Spinning Wheel goals.

"They showed character, heart and deserved it,'' admitted Minors yesterday.

Minors was on 98 goals after his first four seasons in the Commercial League, having scored 26 in his first season with Forties. The following year he notched 22 in his first stint at Spinning Wheel and continued his goal scoring form in the last two seasons with Robin Hood, hitting 24 in the first and then 26 last season.

Unfortunately the century mark was not achieved in a winning cause, but now Minors is setting his sights on a 30-goal season. "It was small consolation even though it was a milestone,'' he said of Saturday's double strike.

"I would have enjoyed the two points better on the day. I would like to hit 30 and that's a realistic total.'' The victory spurred Lobster Pot to the top of the Commercial Division Group A.

With all the matches in the section being decided by a single goal, Pot got the nod due to their totalling more goals than anyone else.

Meanwhile, defending champions BAA Wanderers got off to a winning start, requiring two penalty strikes from the boot of Frankie Brewster to offset an earlier conversion from the spot by Exiles' captain Shawn Simmons.

At Shelly Bay, Island Rangers defeated North Village Rams 4-3, this after leading 4-0 at the half, and Robin Hood downed Forties 1-0, courtesy of a Simon Turner free-kick.

In Group B, Somerset Extros triumphed over Park United 1-0 as Douglas (Durite) Durrant opened his season tally.

Other matches witnessed KPMG blasting St. George's All-Stars 4-2, Wolves drawing 2-2 against Valley, Fire Service easing past Devonshire Lions 4-1 and Devonshire Colts All-Stars administering a 10-0 shellacking upon a seven man Prison Officers.

Just two Alliance Division results were made available by the BFA, Dandy Town 7, North Village 0 and Devonshire Colts 3, St. George's 2.
