Morgan seals win after extra hole

yesterday when she kept her cool on the first extra hole to beat visitor Lee Ann Vogel in the 36-hole final of the 64th Women's Amateur Match Play Championship at Mid Ocean.

Morgan had a fright when, at six-up on the 10th hole of the second round, she saw her opponent battle back to tie it up by the 17th. Vogel, who disposed of defending champion Lisa Griffin in the semifinal the day before, had also trailed by six after the first 18, but refused to throw in the towel and battled back impressively in the afternoon round to halt Morgan's push for victory.

"In the morning she didn't make many putts but in the afternoon she putted good,'' said the new champion afterwards.

"She made an eagle on the 11th, birdied the 12th and then had back to back birdies on 15 and 16. I played some good golf and was hanging in there but she was making the putts.'' As well as eagles and birdies to win important holes, Vogel also won the 14th with a par and then the 17th with a par to square it all up.

"On 18 she was on (green) in regulation and two-putted for par while I one-putted for par to half the hole,'' Morgan explained.

"On the 37th I won with a par after she drove into the left fairway trap and I was left of the trap under a bush. I chipped out and was short but she was right of the greeen and my third shot was about seven feet under the pin.

"She chipped short and then chipped about six feet past the hole. I was lying three on the green and she was four and I dropped my putt for par to win.'' It proved an exciting finish to the week for Morgan which began with a first round qualifying score of 74 only to shoot an 89 on the second day under difficult conditions.

"The conditions were tough, it was very windy that day,'' Morgan recalled.

Morgan proved more consistent once the match play began, moving confidently into the final with a two-and-one victory over Helen Stovell on Thursday. "I played well, it was a small field but with tough competition,'' she said.

"These girls played very good golf and I couldn't let up. They are extremely talented golfers. I had to go out there and hit the ball well. I had a 75 this morning.'' The championship consolation final was won by Bunny Tyler three-and-one over medallist Hannah Steel while the first flight champion is local Shirley Wildi who defeated Valerie Nearon five-and-four in an all-Bermuda final.

In the first flight consolation final Jill Riihiluoma beat Molly McNichols three and two.

Bermuda's four-man golf team enjoyed a rousing opening round at the World Amateur Golf Council's Eisenhower Trophy competition, as they stood 23rd out of 45 countries.

The foursome of Henry Ascento, Scott Mayne, Tony Readwin and Noel van Putten fired a combined total -- three of four scores count -- of 229 to tie Germany for the 23rd spot.

Mayne was the best of the locals, carding a 73 largely due to his ability to adapt to the slick greens at the Golf National course where temperatures hovered around 45 degrees.

In fact play was delayed an hour in order to allow the green to thaw after they had been frozen by an overnight drop in temperature.

Leading the tournament was the United States at 208 followed by Sweden (210) and Australia (212).
