Morton uses videos to preach that Madrid are the Real deal
It's not often that Roberto Carlos, Luis Figo and Steve McManaman are mentioned in the same breath as Sergio Goater, Kevin Jennings and Neil Robinson.
But pop down to a training session taken by North Village coach Scott Morton and you are likely to hear the names of Real Madrid's star players uttered in the same sentence as those of his own.
And what's more the Red Devils now have official backing from arguably the world's most famous team.
Explained Morton: "Basically what we do is look at videos of different teams that play professionally or who play the same way that we play.
"I would look at any team but the team that caught my eye was Real Madrid.
What I did was take all the players from Real Madrid and put down their numbers and match them with the number or position that players play in our team. I tell them to watch and afterwards make comments and see what they have observed.'' Despite the obvious gulf in class between the Spanish Primera Liga and the Bermuda Football Association's top flight, Morton says there are things his players can learn and try to emulate.
The fact Village lie second in the table in only the coach's first season in charge and have already won two trophies in the Charity Cup and the Dudley Eve competition would suggest his arguement holds a lot of water.
"What I see in Real Madrid is that they play so simple. Everything is done simple. It's like we say, professionals do the easy things and amateurs always do the difficult things,'' he said.
"If we just look at the professionals and do similar things, then more than likely you will attain the same type of accomplishments that they do.
"I'm not trying to say that we want to play like Real Madrid, I'm just trying to highlight certain things that make the game much easier for them.'' Morton said his players understood his reasoning but it wasn't always easy getting them to carry it over onto the pitch.
"The difficult part is that players have in their mind that they (Real) are professionals,'' he said.
"They train day in and day out twice a day and those sort of things. But even though they do that when you watch them everything is simple -- all they do is control, pass and move into space.
"Everyone is unselfish and looking for a team-mate. They are always looking to be unselfish and that is what their gameplan is structured upon.'' A spokesman for Real Madrid was full of support for Morton's coaching methods.
"This is a very common method of training for teams who are not in the top tier of world football,'' he said.
"There are even teams who send people to tape on film our ways of training for use by their own clubs. Real Madrid takes real pride in this fact. It is wonderful to be the example that others follow and Real Madrid has always strived to do just that -- to be an example for all football clubs in the world.'' Roberto Carlos: example to Village.
