with $1.4 million allotted in yesterday's budget for the building of changing facilities.

Work on building the new stadium began in September 1985 under then Sports Minister Maxwell Burgess. The stadium re-opened on February 13, 1990 to a mixed reception for the Bermuda-United States match.

There was praise for the lights and the playing surface but the lack of toilet facilites and cramped seating were the major complaints.

Recently during the World Cup campaign FIFA, soccer's world governing body, gave the Bermuda Football Association a warning over the lack of changing facilities and the incident when the crowd ran onto the pitch to celebrate the winning goal against El Salvador.

During the campaign Donald Lines of the Bank of Bermuda was named as chairman of the Board of Trustees to oversee the completion of the stadium.

"The Government has shown that it does have the commitment to getting the National Stadium on the way by putting $1.4 million towards the next phase,'' said Sports Minister Pamela Gordon.

"That is now in the hands of the Board of Trustees.'' The only work done to the stadium of late has been the installing of 2,000 additional seats as well as corrections being made to the irrigational systems, structural lighting problems because of the effect of high winds and the installation of new turnstiles.

There have also been problems with the running track and a new track will be laid under the conditions of the warranty.
