Beach next Saturday will have even more prizes to shoot for.

Organisers of Bermuda's largest single-day junior triathlon have announced three new categories to provide the youngsters with further incentive.

"Based on the growing success of Ironkids over the past 11 years, we decided to expand the event by adding new categories of involvement,'' said Andrew Vaucrosson, vice-president of marketing at Capital G. "We believe that these new categories will enhance the excitement and fun spirit of Ironkids.'' The most lucrative prize will be the `School Award' for schools which have a minimum of 10 entrants in the triathlon. Each school eligible will be entered in a draw for a Gateway Essential 433c computer valued at $2,500.

Meanwhile, there will be a `Most Improved Award', designed to recognise young athletes who participated the previous year and have shown the greatest improvement in their performance.

Lastly, a category to highlight the best boy and best girl performers in each of the age categories -- 7-10 and 11-14 -- has been instituted.

"While there is a competitive element to Ironkids,'' explained Neil de Ste Croix of the Bermuda Triathlon Association, "the emphasis is really on having fun.

"`For example, the swim course is in shallow water, so that kids who are participating do not need to be strong swimmers to take part and have fun.'' Another change for this year is the 3.00 p.m. start time.

Additionally, Special Olympics will host a barbecue immediately following the races at 4.00 p.m.

"We are happy to be involved with Ironkids again this year,'' stated Judy Simons, president of Bermuda Special Olympics. "The proceeds of our barbecue will go towards the purchase of Bocce equipment for a Caribbean regional tournament.'' Forms for the triathlon can be picked up at Capital G Centre, Winners' Edge or Sportseller.
