New Yorkers lift tourney crown
was settled by the number of tries scored and saw Manhattan rugby side Le Vieux walk away as the victors.
Despite losing their opening game of the round robin tournament 7-0 to Teachers, the New Yorkers regrouped and went on to defeat Police, Mariners and Renegades, scoring seven tries in the process.
The highlight of their campaign came against Renegades where determined forward play and solid defence were the keys in a 5-3 victory that denied the local side the chance to retain the trophy they won last year.
It also provided the visitors with some revenge for a 15-10 loss they suffered at the hands of the men in black during a game on Thursday evening.
Teachers finished second in the tournament with four tries. Their best game of the afternoon came against Mariners in which they scored three tries in a 15-7 win.
However, they lost to arch rivals Renegades 7-3 in a close game earlier in the day after newcomer Peter Shillingford crossed the line from a short range penalty for an early score the Reds could not overtake.
Renegades came in third on the day with three close wins against their local competition and Mariners finished up with one win and three losses.
Meanwhile, Police finished without a victory despite keeping the scores close in all of their games against local sides.
They lost 22-0 to Le Vieux but only gave up a total of 14 points against the three local sides.
This weekend, games move to National Sports Club where Teachers and Renegades' second teams will play at 3.30 p.m. on Saturday followed by the game between Mariners and Police at 5.00 p.m. for the Vice-President's Cup.
On Sunday, the first teams for Mariners and Police will square off at 3.30 p.m. with the President's Cup match taking place at 5.00 p.m. between Teachers and Renegades.
