He couldn't believe it when the shark took the bite as he was fishing off the Island.

Officials from the International Game Fish Association have now confirmed Niel is in the record books. No-one had previously entered a mako shark catch for a possible record.

When he made his catch the 15-year-old was with his father and a friend about eight miles northwest of Bermuda.

He was using a 30-pound test line in 132 feet of water when he felt the tug on his rod. The shark died as it was dragged from their boat, Kingfisher , back to Spanish Point.

Said Niel yesterday: "It's great to have made a new Bermuda record. I didn't set out to catch a shark. I was only fishing for yellowtails.'' Niel said he would mount the jaws of the shark on the wall at his home in Cox's Lane, Pembroke.

The rest of the shark would probably be cut up and eaten as steaks.

SHARK AT THIS! -- A proud Niel Jones shows off the remarkable catch which has earned him a place in the record books.
