O'Connor finished first of the 33 swimmers in the 750-metre, one-loop event, with a time of nine minutes, 25 seconds, half a minute ahead of second-placed Chelsea Burns and thrid-placed Flora Duffy, who were separated by one second.

Cowen won the 1,500-metre race over two loops of the same triangular course, which took swimmers from the centre of Horseshoe Beach to the upper eastern corner, then around the rocks of the western corner before returning to the centre of the beach.

Cowen completed the course in 17 minutes, five seconds, beating his brother James Cowen into second place by 35 seconds. Stephen Kenny was third in 17:44.

Three seconds further back in fourth was Katy Stokes who is more used to swimming in pools in England, but took the open water challenge and finished as top female.
