Overbrook beat the odds with Ingraham
Club took full advantage of the faltering of others to overcome a three-stroke deficit and walk off with the 1993 Bermuda Goodwill Tournament.
Ingraham and his trio of amateurs, Dick Quinn, Tom Lavin and Bill Wilson, combined to post a gross score of 63 at Castle Harbour, which converted to 59 net for an overall 242 four-round total.
This enabled them to win by three strokes over six teams -- Holland Country Club, Shaker Farms Country Club, Bermuda's Belmont Golf and Country Club, Bellevue Golf Club and Westchester Hills Golf Club.
Holland were named the second-placed team by virtue of retrogression, while 1992 winners Shaker Farms, whom most thought had the best shot at another title were third after an indifferent outing at Belmont, that witnessed them balloon to a 64 at Belmont.
Nevertheless, there was no denying the men from Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, as they rose to the final day's challenge and wound up deserved victors.
"With the great Bermuda weather and our pro shooting six birdies and an eagle we had to shoot the lights out today,'' said a jubilant Quinn, savouring the fruits of victory.
"That's what really carried us. We (rest of team) were basically cheerleaders.'' A modest Ingraham, however, dispelled the notion that it was a one-man show and instead gave credit to his team-mates for showing great patience and being able to grind their way through a tough week.
It was the second title in four years that Ingraham had shared in as he also won while with Waynesborough Country Club.
And last night he and his band, staying at Horizons, were popping the champagne corks as they were toasted by property general manager Wilhelm Sack.
"We birdied the first two holes and eagled the fourth and that was the real turning point,'' said Ingraham, also a previous winner of the individual pro championship.
"I felt that the other teams had a good shot playing at Belmont, but the only thing is that the condition of the course, with its pin placements and bad lies, caused scores to go up.'' Meanwhile, Willow Bend Club took the gross championship by four strokes over Winchester Country Club after finishing on 257. Bedrock were third on 262.
