Partnership that works

racing at the Bacardi Cup regatta with a top 20 finish in the sixth and final race in Key Biscayne, Florida, yesterday.

Official results were unavailable, but the duo are believed to have secured an overall placing among the top 10 of the Star fleet against world-class competition including noted names such as Americans John Kostecki, who led entering the day, and Mark Reynolds, the Olympic gold medallist.

While Bromby placed higher last year -- he was seventh -- this year's result was just as gratifying as he and White were competing together as a team for the first time in an event of this magnitude. Paul Fisher partnered the Somerset resident at the last regatta.

Benefitting the duo was a decision by the racing committee to reinstate race three where Bromby crossed the finish line sixth. The race was deemed invalid after a black flag flew over the fleet due to several boats getting off to false starts.

A settlement was reached over the awarding of points to the guilty parties and with only five of six races counting toward the final score this allowed the Bermudian to use race one, where he was 27th, as his discard.

Yesterday's placing ended a string of three top 10 finishes from race three to five. In all Bromby and White counted a sixth, eighth and fifth along with his 19th-place finish on Monday and his two aforementioned scores.

The pair even managed to squeeze in a basketball game Thursday night, seizing the opportunity to witness Michael Jordan in action for the Chicago Bulls against the Miami Heat.

Late yesterday Bromby and White were yesterday packing up their boat and preparing to go out to a post-regatta banquet hosted by Bacardi and will return home shortly.
