Perry's aching knees

Burgess Memorial Road Race on Sunday and use the eight-mile event as a build-up for the next race in the KPMG Peat Marwick series.

Sunday's race, which is sponsored jointly by Friswell's Hill United and Swan's Running Club, will start and finish at Devonshire Recreation Club at 9 a.m. It is not park of the Peat Marwick series.

Mark Perry, who is the leader of that series, is one runner who intends to make use of Sunday's race to prepare himself for the next race in the series, which is the former Sun Life 10-K early next month. But Perry has to first shake off some problems he has been experiencing with both knees before making a final decision to enter on Sunday.

"I really want to run this race on Sunday but I have a problem with inflammation in both of my knees and I want to get this corrected. I ran eight miles last night (Tuesday) and when I finished the knees were in bad shape,'' said Perry.

"I am using a lot of ice to get the soreness out and it appears to be working out pretty good. But I will not know if I will run until the deadline nears on Friday,'' he said.

Perry, who this year has been bothered by other nagging injuries, still has managed to sidestep these problems and keep well ahead in the Peat Marwick series where he leads with 64 points. Brett Forgesson is second on 48 and Kavin Smith third on 44 though he has missed some of the races.

Despite his problems Perry has recorded victories in the Maple Leaf 10-K, Yamaha 10-K, the Round the Town 5-miler, and the Somerset Police 5-miler.

The Stanley Burgess race was won by Vernon Tankard last year in a time of 46:25 with Mike Whalley second (47:23) and Fred Steede third (47:40). But with prominent runners like Perry entering there is likely to be a much faster winning time.

Perry is hoping to clock between "42 and 43 minutes.'' MARK PERRY.
