PHC eye upset in County clash
Western Counties third round confident of springing an upset on new champions Southampton Rangers at White Hill field (11 a.m.). Certainly they have nothing to lose on their debut in the competition, which has a reputation for producing the unexpected.
Already the cup has changed hands twice this season, when Somerset Bridge were dethroned by Warwick in the first round and then Rangers taking the cup off Warwick's hands a couple of weeks ago in the last round.
Now PHC will attempt the unexpected. They have named Lloyd Morrison of Devonshire Rec. as their only guest player. And while most of the PHC team will be playing in the Western Counties for the first time, they do have players with previous counties experience.
Kevin Dill, their vice captain, played for Warwick, Morrison for Rangers and Alfred Carter for Somerset Bridge while wicketkeeper Antoine Greene and Braxton Stowe played in the Eastern Counties with Flatts.
PHC have named a squad of 13 for the match with the final 11 being chosen this morning.
"We just have to go out there and minimise our errors and capitalise on theirs,'' says captain Cal Waldron, who insists his team has a chance at victory.
"At the end of the day the team that makes the least mistakes will win. We have a good spirit in the camp.'' If Rangers bat first PHC's task will be to keep them under 200 in the 50 overs contest. "At White Hill, 180 is a good total and if we bat first then keep the scoreboard rolling with the singles,'' said Waldron.
Rangers were forced to make three changes to last round's winning team, with Gregory Sampson, a colt against Warwick, forced out through a hamstring injury while Quinton Sherlock and Darren Burchall have both returned to school abroad.
Coming in is vice captain Janeiro Tucker for his first match in several weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery. The other changes are guest player Clarkie Trott of Bailey's Bay, who smashed 72 not out of the Willow Cuts bowlers in his debut in 1995, and bowler Gary Crofton who gives the team an extra bowling option. Kwame Tucker is likely to keep wicket in the absence of Burchall.
