Police aiming high

popular of the three counties, they are very much capable of snatching the prestigious BF&M Cup Champion of Champions Trophy over the long weekend.

Dennis Archer, skipper of their representatives Police, assures that his team will be offering a formidable challenge to their counterparts in the Eastern and Western Counties this year.

Police will tomorrow take on the winners of today's Eastern Counties Cup final with the winners tomorrow clashing with Somerset Bridge of the Western Counties in Monday's final. Both games are at Lord's, starting at 11a.m. and Bailey's Bay are the defending champions.

Although Police will be minus the service of allrounder Tyrone Smith, overlooked because of his apparent lack of commitment to training this season, Archer remains confident.

"Whoever we play I feel that as long as Police show up and play to their full capabilities then we are going to have a good chance of winning, we simply must play as a unit,'' said Archer.

"We don't intend to give in easily to either Bailey's Bay or St. David's, we will be doing everything to make it to Monday's final. Naturally Bailey's Bay will be our strongest opponents, but it doesn't matter who we play.'' Having already lost to Bay at Police field in limited overs play this season, Archer recognises the fact that the reigning champions are a formidable force with Noel Gibbons and Glenn Smith now back from their Minor County sides in England.

But he feels that his team got a tremendous boost when they scored a surprise 29-run victory over Western Stars on June 29th to win the Central Counties, and now he is keeping his fingers crossed in hope that the momentum will assist them in this competition.

The two players who spearheaded the demolition of Stars was the skipper himself and spinner Dwayne Leverock. Archer struck a season high 73 in the final while Leverock snatched four for 18.
