Police sink the Mariners
Police stretched their lead at the top of the Division One table on Sunday with a dominating forwards display.
After shrugging off early Mariners' pressure, number eight Dave Bird picked the ball up and drove over the line to score the first try of the day which was converted by fly half Alan Oliver -- who had missed two penalties earlier.
Police continued to attack and scrum half Gareth Davies scored the next try from a ruck on the Mariners' line which Oliver converted.
Oliver then showed he could run as well when he took the ball from the ensuing kick off and broke through the defence to race up field, where captain Dave Lunn was driven over the line to score.
Mariners came back hard and were awarded a penalty inside the Blues' 22 which centre Daniel Olsen took quickly. He fed fly half Keith Hodgkinson who slid into the corner for the try.
Hodgkinson then converted to make the score 19-7 at half time.
After the half Oliver kicked a penalty to increase the margin and Mariners began to throw all their effort into attack.
The Blues' defence refused to break until the Police forwards took over again and flanker Danny Cozens scored.
Oliver did not convert but redeemed himself later after a scrum near Mariners' line when Davies passed to him and he crashed through the defence to score. He missed the conversion.
Mariners tried to claw their way back with a try from Olsen and a conversion from Hodgkinson.
Teachers 17 Renegades 16 Reds' first XV got their first win of the season on Sunday when fly half Ross Webber kicked a penalty in the last seconds of the game.
During the first half a succession of Teachers' errors kept them from building momentum and Renegades' fly half Phil Heaney capitalised on the mistakes by kicking two penalties.
Renegades' wing Sean Kelly stretched the lead further when he got the ball inside his own half and raced the length of the field. Heaney converted and kicked a third penalty to take the score to 16-0 at the half.
Afterward Teachers got on the board when centre Scott Correia fed wing Heath Robinson who scored under the posts and Webber converted.
Teachers were awarded a scrum at the 22 when Andrew Correia attacked and passed to flanker Henry Adderley who flung the ball inside to number eight Patrick Cooper. He barrelled over the line to score and Webber converted.
With the score 16-14, Teachers were awarded a penalty which was taken quickly but Renegades had failed to retire ten yards as required so the Reds were given another penalty closer to the posts. Webber calmly slotted the kick over to give his team the lead for the first time in the game.
Mariners 12 Police 10 Mariners' second XV managed to come back and beat a determined Blues' outfit in Saturday's opening game.
The Greens got on the board first during a slow first half when fly half Derek Kilcoyne fed centre Andy Godwin who broke two tackles to score between the posts.
In the second half, Police came out strong behind solid forward play and the determined running of wings Troy Glasgow and Vaughn Davis.
Davis scored in the corner to level the scores after strong forward play from the kick off. Then Davis raced across the field to link up with Glasgow, who sped down the sideline and fed the fly half who scored.
But Mariners' persistence paid off when they were awarded a penalty five yards out which Kilcoyne took quickly and scored.
Teachers 15 Renegades 7 Teachers managed to hold off a spirited challenge from Renegades on Saturday to help keep them in sight on second team league leaders Mariners.
After early Renegade pressure Teachers turned the tide and marched up field where number eight Patrick McHugh kicked a penalty in front of the posts.
In the second half, Renegades put together some fluid passing which allowed full back Mark Waddington come crashing through the defence to score untouched under the posts. Tim Boynton converted the try.
Teachers came back at the Blacks and put together some flowing support play which resulted in wing Eddie King forcing his way past two tacklers to score.
Reds continued to attack and wing Kevin Walsh fed fly half James Morrisson, who scored.
