Pomander entries reach new high

Way, have signed up for the 21st annual Pomander Gate Open tennis tournament which gets underway at the Paget club courts tomorrow.

The event, which winds up on June 25, will see Way defend his men's singles crown in the A division, but with Donna Bradshaw off the Island, a new ladies A division champion is assured.

The largest event is the Men's B singles which boasts 82 players led by top seed David Lambert.

While Way will be favourite to add to his string of Bermuda singles titles, he and partner Mike Curry face a tough challenge in the men's doubles in which Ricky Mallory and Steve Bean will be aiming for an amazing eighth straight championship.

With Bradshaw absent, veteran Gill Butterfield has been seeded number one among the women, having won the Heineken Open title back in May.

Debbie Darrell will be among her main challengers as will be Kim Simmons, the recently installed club pro at Pomander Gate.

The ladies B singles has Julie Bett and Ellen Kelly as one and two seeds respectively.

Butterfield and Curry are seeded number one in mixed doubles followed by Kim Simmons and Steve Bean.

Among the dark horses in the Men's A singles could be top college player James Collieson who is back on the Island, having compiled some impressive results while competing in the US.
