Pot catch BAA napping in first cup upset

A year out of the First Division, BAA earned the dubious distinction of becoming the first Second Division team to be ousted by a Commercial side in this year's FA Cup.

A more determined Lobster Pot team made sure of that last night at BAA Field in this rescheduled Elimination round match when Tony Smith scored the winner with a 66th minute header that went in off the far post, leaving goalkeeper Paul Hayward stranded.

BAA had given early indication of their intentions when Tito Smith, their best player, struck a volley in the fifth minute that was kept out by a brilliant one-handed save from Lobster Pot 'keeper Keith Hodgkins.

But it was the Commercial team that took the lead in the 12th minute when a cross into the BAA box enabled the unmarked Michael Evans to tuck a first time shot past the advancing Hayward as home team defenders Leo Simmons and Frankie Brewster Jr. stood looking at each other.

A big hole was poked in the BAA defence again in the 22nd minute following a cross from the left as Hayward barely managed to turn Rob Eastham's shot around a post.

BAA finally equalised in the 33rd minute when Craig Crichlow found the net with a shot from deep on the left which beat Hodgkins before nestling in the far top corner.

But the Greens were still having problems asserting their authority and in the 35th minute they made their first substitution, bringing on Kirk Butterfield for the out-of-touch Alfred Wolffe.

BAA found themselves trailing again when Smith's header found the back of the net midway through the second half after he was allowed to connect with a cross from the right. That left the home team to battle for a second equaliser but this time Pot were determined not to concede their hard-earned lead.

BAA wasted a few early chances in the half when Tito Smith shot straight at the 'keeper and then lifted a free kick over the bar.

But their two best chances came in a five minute period late in the game. In the 78th minute Smith turned and shot low and just inches wide of the far post. That was followed by an effort from Butterfield which was forced out for a goalkick after a challenge from the 'keeper.

BAA's last opportunity came three minutes from the end when Crichlow beat the advancing 'keeper to a high ball into the box but headed wide of an empty goal.

During the closing minutes the Lobster Pot defence absorbed increased pressure from BAA. Referee Leroy Wilson's final whistle brought smiles to the Pot camp, confirming their spot in the next round against another Second Division team, Social Club.

Belco 2 Spinning Wheel 1 After a nervous beginning on their FA Cup debut, new Commercial Division team, Belco, settled down to produce a shock win over Spinning Wheel in this Elimination round match at BAA Field last night as giant striker Vernon Martin netted twice.

The game was evenly matched when Spinning Wheel took an 18th minute lead with a well taken goal from Gregory Raynor. Belco's defence were beaten by a high ball from the left to the far post where Raynor got it under control before smashing a firm shot into the top corner from a sharp angle, leaving goalkeeper Bruce Foggo with no chance.

Minutes later Wheel almost doubled their lead but this time Allan Fray headed over the top from another cross from the left.

Late in the half Belco picked up their game with former First Division player Roydon Holdipp working tirelessly in midfield. Holdipp lifted a shot over the bar as Belco pressed hard for the equaliser, which finally came on the half hour when Martin opened his account by converting a cross from the right.

Both teams went close to scoring a second goal in the closing minutes of the half, with two of the better chances falling to Spinning Wheel as Johnny Nusum sent a free kick from 25 yards screaming past a post. Then the speedy Raynor nipped inbetween two defenders before shooting over the top.

Belco scored what would prove to be their winner in the 53rd minute when slack marking let Martin in for his second goal of the match. This time a cross from the right was headed back across goal by Cameron Rawlins and Martin rose to nod down past Steven Proctor in goal.

Rawlins had a good chance soon after to make it a comfortable 3-1 lead but he poked his shot wide of the far post after a good move down the left by captain Oscar Samuels who laid on the chance.

Belco forced a couple of quick corners but couldn't break through as Holdipp shop just wide from the second corner. At the other end Wheel had the ball in the net through Keith Bell but that effort in the 78th minute was ruled offside.

Spinning Wheel intensified their raids late in the game in a desperate bid to pull back level but the Belco defence, marshalled in the middle by David Furtado, stood firm.

Belco have now earned the right to meet Second Division St. David's in the next round on November 12, an exciting tie for two Islanders in the Belco team, 'keeper Foggo and right-back Anthony Paynter.

Last night's lone FA Cup Elimination round fixture at PHC between Island Rangers and Hamilton Parish was called off for the second time in three days -- this time when the lights on the eastern boundary of the pitch failed to work.

Referee George O'Brien and both teams were prepared for the 8 o'clock kick-off and waited a further 30 minutes after being told by club officials that the problem would be fixed. But when the fault was not corrected O'Brien informed the teams that the game was off.
