PRE-MATCH PLANNING PAYS OFF FOR BERMUDA
NAIROBI, Kenya -- Bermuda completed their warm-up schedule for the 1994 ICC Trophy Tournament with a resounding victory over Young Kenya at Simba Union yesterday.
The 109-run triumph was clearly Bermuda's finest performance since arriving in Nairobi just over a week ago and sends them into Sunday's tournament opener in high spirits.
Opening batsmen Dexter Smith (63) and captain Albert Steede (68) gave Bermuda an ideal start with 150 in 31 overs. Then Clay Smith and Jeff Richardson struck half centuries to help post the team's highest total thus far.
Anthony Edwards was the bowling hero with five for 37 in 10 overs. The match also represented Bermuda's best day in the field which was what Steede was most concerned with beforehand.
"We had a meeting the night before and talked about having a solid all-round match and we did just that,'' said a confident Steede.
But the mood was not always upbeat for the Bermuda contingent as last-minute changes to yesterday's team were made. Noel Gibbons is nursing a sore hamstring and after a morning warm-up he was scratched in favour of Kenny Phillip.
Allen Richardson replaced Arnold Manders who is mourning the passing of his father on Tuesday after a long illness. Out of respect, Bermuda had a minute's silence before taking to the field.
Bermuda's chase for runs began immediately with Dexter Smith and Steede running between the wicket well and then picking up the odd boundary. Both batsmen gave chances after they were set, Steede playing half-hearted at an on-drive that was spilt at mid-wicket and Smith lofting a straight drive that was put down at long-on. Both players were in their 30s.
But after the mental lapses, they went about the task of putting Bermuda in a very strong position against the side they had lost to on Monday.
The dismissal of Smith signalled a mini-collapse. The left-hander had scored his runs from 84 balls in 123 minutes and hit a six and seven fours. His innings ended when he was bowled around his legs by off-spinner Hitesh Modi while attempting a `paddle' to the vacant fine-leg area.
Allen Richardson was out two balls later to the same bowler, spooning a return catch and then on the first ball of the next over, Steede was trapped lbw by medium-pacer David Tikolo.
Steede hit five fours from 103 balls in 130 minutes.
Clay Smith (52) and Jeff Richardson (55 not out) then went about the business of putting on 96 runs from 82 balls for the fourth wicket. Richardson was coming off consecutive ducks and was especially pleased with his half-century which came off 48 balls. He hit eight fours.
The prolific Clay Smith reached the 50 mark first and he was never afraid to take on the bowling, despite giving a chance before he reached double figures.
Richardson and Quinton Burch (14) accounted for another 48 runs before Burch was bowled on the final ball of the innings. Modi was Young Kenya's most successful bowler with three for 53 from 10 overs.
The Kenyans were not about to go into a corner and hide after being run ragged in the early session.
Dipak Gupta, who made 73 in the opening tour match, introduced himself to Terry Burgess in vicious style with four fours in the first over.
But Burgess fought back to finish with none for 36 from his 10 overs while Edwards at the other end chipped away at the wickets. Gupta went on to make 90 from 109 balls before he was caught at short cover by Steede off spinner Bruce Perinchief.
Edwards' four overs in his second spell earned three for 15 while Clay Smith's off-spinners came in handy as he took one for 20 from 6.3 overs.
"Everything went according to plan,'' said captain Steede. "The bowlers started badly but then they worked on their line and length to keep them to a low total.
"We took some brilliant catches. Jeff took a good catch and Burch took a brilliant one at the end.'' The team will now go into `warm down' mode before Sunday's opening clash with West Africa at Aga Khan Sports Club.
"We have a few light training sessions until Sunday during which we will iron out a few things in our personal game,'' said Steede. "We will be ready on Sunday.'' Due to transmission difficulties the scoreboard from yesterday's match is unavailable. It will be included in tomorrow's newspaper.
DEXTER SMITH -- Along with Albert Steede, duo got Bermuda off to flying start.
