Promoted Parish facing swift return

Second Division, their promotion partners last season, Wolves, need just a point to assure their own safety.

Bottom team Parish will make the drop if they fail to win against league leaders Vasco tomorrow and Boulevard take a point off Southampton Rangers.

That would leave Southampton Rangers, Devonshire Colts, Boulevard and Devonshire Cougars battling to avoid the second relegation spot.

Wolves have more than held their own in their first season back in the top flight in seven years, climbing into the top four by Christmas -- which secured a first ever Dudley Eve spot -- and remaining in the top four over the last couple of months.

In their five games in 1999 Wolves have lost just once and the eight goals they have conceded in 14 league games is the second best defensive record next to Vasco who have let in six.

And while the league championship is out of their reach, Wolves have a good chance of improving on their best finish in the First Division which they managed in 1989-90 when they finished third behind champions PHC and runners-up Dandy Town. They also qualified for the Martonmere Cup for the first time the following year when they reached the semi-finals. They were also relegated that season.

Wolves blew the chance to inflict the first league defeat this season on Vasco when Peter Sampson had a penalty saved by goalkeeper Timmy Figureido eight minutes from the end of their scoreless draw in midweek.

Tomorrow Wolves take on third-placed North Village at Devonshire Rec. in one of the day's top matches. With only two points separating them from Dandy Town in second place, Wolves could climb to second after the weekend.

Town are in action tonight when they travel to Somerset to take on the fifth-placed Trojans who need one more victory to be safe from relegation.

Vasco's draw in midweek means that they cannot clinch the league title tomorrow, even with a win at Wellington Oval against Parish. They presently lead Dandy Town and North Village by six points with four games remaining, but with matches to come against Somerset, Boulevard and Devonshire Colts after this weekend, Vasco are almost certain now to defend their title. It is also very likely that they will end the season unbeaten in the league.

In order for Town and Village to catch Vasco, the leaders will have to drop at least six points in their last four games, which would mean either three draws, two defeats or one loss and two draws.

Cougars face a must-win situation away to Devonshire Colts at White Hill in a repeat of their recent FA Cup clash. Victory for Colts would put them seven points clear of the second relegation spot with three matches to go and should make them safe.

Another important relegation clash will be at St. David's where Boulevard entertain Southampton Rangers, who seem to have forgotten how to win, having failed to do so in the league since November when they briefly held first place.

Two of the three matches in the Second Division tomorrow involve crucial head-to-head battles. Second-placed St. David's can eliminate Social Club from the promotion equation and boost their own hopes with victory at Lord's.

Third and fourth placed teams, Somerset Eagles and Prospect meet at White Hill when one of them could also be eliminated.

With three matches remaining, St. David's lead Eagles by three points with Prospect a further three points behind. PHC, already promoted, take on Paget at Southampton Oval in tomorrow's other match, knowing that their next big match will be their Shield semi-final against St. David's on March 16.

In tonight's opening match at Somerset, Shield finalists St. George's take on Ireland Rangers in a clash between the bottom two teams.

Robin Hood can wrap up the Commercial League title today at BAA Field (3.00) when they take on defending champions BAA Wanderers who are presently third.

Victory for Hood would keep them at least four points ahead of second-placed Fire Service, with just one match remaining after today.
