Prospect stunned by late burst from BAA
Prospect were 12 minutes away from making it five Shield losses for BAA before the Green Knights astonishingly turned this final around with three goals in nine minutes last night.
Prospect had taken the lead in the 66th minute with the best goal of the night -- a 25-yarder off the boot of Lyndon Fubler -- but the smiles in the Prospect camp soon turned to frowns as an own goal by defender Gary Holberry in the 76th minute and further strikes from Dennis Davis and Duncan Ashworth in the 83rd and 85th minutes put BAA in a surprisingly comfortable position with the last few minutes left on referee Chris Jones' watch.
"I felt confident right from the beginning,'' said BAA coach Johnny Adams afterwards. "It wasn't a good game football-wise but both teams gave a lot of effort. It's a good ending to a poor season.
"Over the 90 minutes we were the better team. I thought we were fitter than they were. I knew the more they pushed forward that they would get tired.'' BAA finished second from the bottom in the Second Division so the win is some reward for a hard season.
"At one time eight out of our first 11 were out for about two months,'' said Adams.
Prospect went close to taking the lead just 35 seconds into the match when Clifton Roberts saw his far post header from the first corner of the match blocked on the line.
Gradually, BAA came into contention with Davis, Cleve Crichlow and Ashworth testing the Prospect defence. Prospect were inspired by the hard work of Peter Philpott and Robert Goodchild in midfield.
A strong run down the right flank by BAA captain Robert Pacheco saw his shot blocked by the goalkeeper before the ball rolled into the side netting. Then just before the half, 'keeper Andrew Bissell was caught off his line after a half-clearance and the lob from Ashworth bounced past the far post.
Referee Jones issued six bookings in the match with two coming in the first half when he took the names of Anthony Stoneham for dissent and Fubler for retaliating. Pacheco, Norman Correia and Davis of BAA and Holberry of Prospect were booked in the second half for fouls.
After Fubler gave Prospect the lead with both teams waiting to make their first substitutions, team-mate Holberry erased it 10 minutes later when his attempted clearance struck Bissell and went over the line.
Charged up, BAA kept on the pressure and were rewarded with their second goal when a free kick by Stoneham was chipped behind the Prospect defence for the overlapping Pacheco to beat the advancing 'keeper to the ball and cross unselfishly for Davis to apply the finishing touches from close range.
The third BAA goal settled the match as Ashworth dribbled into the box and kept his cool to place his shot past Bissell.
