Rafter may show at Open
is in progress and there is reportedly a chance he may play an exhibition match at Coral Beach.
Rafter was unable to sign up for his customary appearance in the doubles this year because of a clash with a Masters Series tournament in Monte Carlo, where all the top 50 players are obliged to play, if healthy.
But the Bermuda resident pulled out of Monte Carlo yesterday, citing an elbow injury.
Reports yesterday suggested that Rafter had indicated he would like to play an exhibition match, as he did two years ago at Coral Beach.
Tournament director Alec Anderson was quoted in a newspaper yesterday as saying such an exhibition would require the permission of the ATP Tour, because of the clash with Monte Carlo. And this Sunday, when a clinic will be held for youngsters featuring US Davis Cup player Justin Gimelstob between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., was suggested as the likeliest day for Rafter's appearance.
But when questioned about the possibility of a Rafter exhibiton, Anderson yesterday refused to comment.
Meanwhile, Magnus Larsson has been added to the Open field and American Vince Spadea could also enter at the 11th hour.
Larsson, a former US Open semi-finalist, will be obliged to play qualifying matches at the weekend, because of his late entry, but if he gets through, the Swede would be a strong contender for the title.
Tournament manager Maribeth Anderson said Spadea had expressed an interest in taking part, but had not yet confirmed.
