Rangers fight back

Southampton marched into the next round of the Second Division Shield competition as they outlasted an unfit Wolves outfit for a 2-1 win in the curtain-raiser at Devonshire Rec. field last night.

Rangers were forced to come from behind after Vincent Whitter had put Wolves ahead with a 24th-minute strike. Alfred Wolffe equalised and it was left to college student Janeiro Tucker to settle the issue in Southampton's favour on account of his goal midway through the second half.

The first half was played at a rapid pace -- for which Wolves would ultimately pay a dear price -- with neither side particularly dominating.

Controlling much of the play for Rangers were Lamar Seymour, Corey Simmons and Tucker while most attacks by Wolves came through Dion Wainwright, Blake Outerbridge and Shannon Tuzo.

Rangers' goalkeeper Lynn Tucker almost handed his opponents the lead in the 18th minute when a rising drive by Outerbridge eluded his grasp but fortuitously bounced off the crossbar.

There was a six-minute lull in the action until Wolves stunned Rangers, taking the lead through a quick counter-attack.

Outerbridge orchestrated the play when he found room on the left side and worked a neat one-two with Wainwright and unleashed a powerful drive, which Tucker allowed to rebound off his body for an onrushing Whitter to ram home.

However, this lead would be short-lived when a controversial tally by Wolffe brought the score level.

A free kick from midfield by Donnie Charles saw Wolffe latch onto the ball and, with the linesman flagging for offside continue on to slot the ball home on the second attempt after his first shot was blocked. Despite appeals referee Kenneth Perinchief chose to ignore the linesman's flag and award the goal.

The second half was all Rangers as Wolves simply ran out of steam and were forced on the defensive.

And after absorbing mountains of pressure they finally caved in the 69th minute when a miskick by centre-half Dean Pitt presented Tucker with a free run at goal. Tucker proceeded to lob the ball over an advancing Smith for the final score.
