Ref's attack shocks Wolves coach
That is why the Wolves coach was shocked to read referee Stuart Crockwell's comments about his conduct in yesterday's Royal Gazette.
Crockwell said he has "a major problem with the two coaches from Wolves''.
His comments came in reaction to incidents during Sunday's match at St.
David's between Boulevard and Wolves in which two players were sent off late in the game for fighting.
But Brown, a former Bermuda international captain, defends his record, pointing out that Nathan Webb was the first Wolves player ejected this season.
"I don't want to get into a war of words with any referee or BFA official, but I think we have to defend ourselves in reference to what Mr Crockwell had to say,'' said Brown yesterday.
"In response to what he had to say that players and coaches play a big part in curbing the violence, I would like to say that refereeing has to be consistent and the refereeing is not consistent.
"He (Crockwell) said players have to know the laws but if you are calling one team one way and another team another way, that tells me you are not being consistent.'' Brown and assistant coach Kirt Douglas were taken to task over their conduct on the bench and accused of constantly standing up.
"As far as him giving us instructions and we didn't listen, that's a ludicrous statement because Crockwell is the type of referee who, if you don't listen to him, he is going to deal with you,'' said Brown.
"I give instructions and sit back down. I wouldn't take exception that I'm bigger than the game because I'm not.'' Brown continued: "Another thing I didn't like was what he said about lacking discipline and control.
"Any person who knows me and my players will tell you that one thing I do stress is discipline on and off the pitch.
"Statistically, this was our first red card of the season from the players and we haven't even had too many yellow cards. At this stage now we have certain players who don't train, so if you don't train you don't play.
"We have a player who, if his schoolwork is not up to par, he doesn't play.'' To defend his stand on discipline Brown referred to an incident in the previous match against Somerset when one of his senior players showed disrespect to Douglas and was substituted immediately...20 minutes into the game! Brown has one solution to improving local football.
"In order for us to improve this game in Bermuda we all have to work together instead of criticising each other,'' said Brown.
"We go a long way to trying to educate our players ourselves, but if a referee is being inconsistent in his officiating then a player is going to question that.
"I feel the referees have to improve as well. I feel if the referees assess their play through the videotapes they will see a lot of mistakes.'' Added Brown: "There was a situation on Sunday whereby they scored and our goalkeeper was blatantly pushed down. A goal was disallowed from us because he said we pushed their goalkeeper.'' Brown went as far as to say that he felt his team was being `watched' by officials.
"It seems, for some unknown reason, that we are being victimised and closely watched,'' he said.
"The minute I got up to give instructions I was told to sit down, before I had even finished giving the instructions.''
