SAILING SLG The Heineken Spring Series continued in the western waters of Hamilton Harbour with nine boats testing the conditions.
The Burrows Lightbourne sponsored event saw the Laser fleet produce many a wild gybe and even a few amazing capsises in almost ideal 14 to 18 knot breezes.
The racing for the day was mainly for third and fourth spot as it soon became clear that Adam Barboza's experience in the heavier conditions would be too much for the other competitors to overcome. A string of eight straight wins means that the focus of the racing would shift to the heated battle for the runners-up position.
Second place was also decided midway through as Peter Shrubb showed his transom to the remainder of the fleet on quite a few occasions. Third-place honours for the day was where the action really was as Olympian Ray DeSilva, Mike Carey and Steve Hannon struggled all day to show who was the best of the rest.
Many close calls and verbal discussions resulted in DeSilva snatching the third spot from Carey's grasp. Hannon held off the flyweights of Carla Cooper and Scott Mello to finish in the top five.
The Laser class will be doubling up on its racing schedule with the waters full of activity on Tuesday evenings. Sailors will be gearing up for the upcoming International Race Week, which will see the local fleet in head-to-head competition with foreign racers.
