Revived Vasco still have something to offer

North Village saw their chances of garnering silverware further eroded when they came upon a hard charging Vasco outfit and were firmly booted from the Friendship trophy competition at PHC last night.

Two neatly taken efforts by Derek Thomas and infrequent starter Albert Wolffe were more than enough to wreck the plans of North Village, coming off a 6-0 win over St. David's on Sunday.

Hard nosed defence and forceful offence paved the way for the triumph by Vasco, who are still in both cup competitions. They face St. George's in the FA Cup this weekend.

Early signs of flash threatened to deceive, as the crowd was often left longing for signs of life from either side.

After five minutes Red Devils' skipper Elliott Jennings slammed a free-kick barely wide of the net, with goalkeeper Gerald Sims only a spectator.

Sims had been called into action due to Bermuda Regiment duty by regular Keenan Tucker, but he rarely saw action between the sticks facing an anaemic Village front line.

Another notable absentee was Ricky Mallory, who has returned to university abroad.

However, Village, depleted also by college omissions, failed to take advantage of their opponent's shortcomings and paid the price for their own ineptitude.

Meanwhile, Jennings again brought the crowd to life four minutes prior to the interval when his near perfect free-kick crashed off Sims' crossbar before being cleared.

At the other end Irving Burgess -- later one of the heroes -- placed his right footed effort inches wide as the half came to a close.

Following the break Ricky Hill was introduced to boost a sagging Village attack, but his presence failed to alter matters and it was Vasco surging into the lead.

A left wing cross from Burgess, was partially cleared to a well positioned Thomas, who picked his corner and drilled the ball home past a helpless Carlyle Crockwell.

Confidence boosted, the home side stormed forward with renewed enthusiasm in search of the knockout blow.

Kentoine Jennings took matters into his own hands in the 66th minute and had a try scrambled away, but desperation was clearly settling into the Village psyche.

Wolffe, put the result beyond a doubt when he produced a delicate chip over Crockwell, with 75 minutes gone.

With two wins Vasco in a row Vasco now go into Sunday's FA Cup tie against St.

George's on a roll, making for much intrigue.

Wolves 0, BAA 1 (after extra time) A `topsy turvy' season continued for Wolves when they failed in converting domination to goals, and were knocked out of the Second Division Shield competition.

A beauty by Robert Pacheco eight minutes into the first period of extra time sent Wolves howling with tails between their legs.

Pacheco popped up at the right moment to drill home a 20 yard effort following a through-ball from his own defence.
