Rival renew bid to keep hopes of league, FA Cup double alive
After going through three replays in last year's semifinal with Dandy Town, FA Cup champions Boulevard will be hoping to settle their quarter-final tie with North Village before they leave PHC Stadium tonight. The match starts at 8 p.m.
Granted, last year's four matches with the Hornets did not prevent them from winning the FA Cup for a second time in three years. However, it did come with a price as they had Neil (Diamond) Robinson sent off and captain Albert Smith taken to hospital with a knee injury during the 3-3 draw at Devonshire Rec. in the second replay.
And while Smith is still sidelined with leg problems, Robinson has just completed a three-match ban for a recent sending off against Devonshire Colts and should be available for selection for the crucial replay which sees both teams bidding to keep alive their hopes of the league and FA Cup double.
Village's main concern must be their defence which does not have the same stable look about it with Kentoine Jennings missing. Jennings has a leg injury and has been advised to rest by his doctor.
In his absence on Sunday against Vasco -- as well as that of Kevin Jennings who was initially pencilled in to start -- Village slotted veteran Eugene (Hammer) Simmons into the defence, first at left-back and then in the middle alongside Derek Bell.
Village have gone through a rough patch lately, though they showed plenty of character in battling back to draw 2-2 with Boulevard in the first match.
Their front line of Ricky Hill, Sean Dill and Philip Clarke did not click on Sunday while Andrew Bascome and Elliott Jennings were below par in midfield.
Boulevard's own injury problems are improving with Wayne Richardson having returned to the defence where he and George Smith provide the stability along with Dean Boyles at fullback. Up front captain Dwight Warren and Kenny Hill will lead their quest for goals.
Hill is among the leading scorers in the First Division with nine goals, but while he and Warren are the main Boulevard scoring threats, Village can boast a number of capable scorers.
Philip Clarke, Sean Dill and Elliott Jennings all have five while veteran Hill is still one of the most respected strikers around.
The winners of tonight's replay will take on Vasco in the semifinals on February 20. No prizes for guessing who Vasco would like to play!
