Road running
smashing success on Saturday with over 370 young runners from all over the Island participating in various age groups.
Dominating the event were the western primary schools, which came away with six of the eight team prizes.
West End stood tallest, capturing three, with the girls and boys four-to-five age group as well as the boys six-to-seven category counted among them.
Taking two were Somerset Primary -- girls six to seven and eight to nine -- while Port Royal weighed in with the boys eight to nine team title.
Other winners were West Pembroke (girls 10 to 12) and Prospect Primary (boys 10-12).
Individually, 12-year-old Ernest Signor sprinted away with boys' honours when he clocked nine minutes and 12 seconds over one-and-a-half miles to beat Tyler Butterfield by eight seconds. Jahkee Smith placed third in 9:31.
Promising female Velvet Smith went even better while recording a victory in the girls' 10-to-12 bracket.
Smith clocked 9:34 -- for a 6:23 mile pace -- which was almost a minute better than second and third-place finishers Tamara Scraders (10:20), Sherrie Seymour (10:22).
The eight to nine-year-olds were asked to cover one mile and Rachel Barton (6:28) emerged as the leading girl, ahead of Akilah Mills (6:44) and Aaliyah Rasheed (6:51).
For the boys, Wayne Raynor surged to the top of the heap on the tails of his 6:12 time, a mere seven seconds in front of Lonnie Bascome (6:19), who had to battle hard to beat third-place boy, Fraser Hunt (6:20).
Shane Morrisey (six to seven age group) made his way around the half-mile course in 3:06, which was good enough for the win.
Lawson Williams secured second (3:10) with Sam Riihiluoma (3:11) third.
Among the girls, Twanee Butterfield and Claire Kimbel hooked up in the day's closest finish.
However, at the end, it was the former taking the title by a second in 3:25.
Third went to Timika Olden (3:30).
In the youngest group (four to five years) Vernell Lambe garnered a first-place finish. He was timed in 1:45 over a quarter-mile with Edmeiko Brangman (1:48) second and Andrew Tucker (1:49) third.
For the girls, Stephanie James (1:46) was victorious followed by Nandi Davis (1:47) and Vernee Proctor (1:48).
YACHTING SLG Soft winds added to an air of superiority for Malcolm Smith, who captured the Laser Fleet Racing series with ease after seven victories in the 10-race regatta on Sunday.
Aided by a light, five-knot breeze whispering from the east to south-east, Smith locked up first place with a sterling 10.25 points at the Sandys Boat Club competition. Andreas Lewin proved to be Smith's stiffest competitor, winning the remaining races for a series total of 16.25 points.
Three other racers were close behind, but off the pace during most of the competition. Strong finishes by Ted Wood in later races allowed him to slip past Lee White for third place. Wood finished with 35 points while White -- a recent competitor in the Bacardi Cup at Key Biscayne, Florida, along with Peter Bromby -- finished fourth with 40 points.
Craig Davis slipped to fifth place with 46 points, on the heels of poor results in some of the races.
Dave Moore, who was among the early leaders in several races, could not deliver enough consistency to finish in good position. Moore did complete the series with a respectable 46 points.
A close battle developed at the back of the fleet between novice skipper Michael Siese (63 points), and veteran skippers Guy Eldridge (60 points), Bromby (62 points) and Odwin Berkeley (72 points), who had problems working up enough boat speed.
The racers will return to action next Sunday at Mangrove Bay with competition beginning at 1 p.m.
SOCCER SOC Two championships were decided with Robin Hood and PHC capturing the Commercial and Alliance divisions' KO Cups respectively .
Hood came back from a goal down at halft-ime in the former to defeat Forties 2-1 with Derek Stapley and Des Minors the goal-scorers for the victors.
This after Leon Bascome had given Forties the early lead.
Meanwhile the Zebras, spurred by a Mark Smith hat-trick and a solo strike from Raynell Lightbourne, downed Devonshire Colts 4-2.
Anoither scheduled match saw Spinning Wheel defeat Fire Service by default after the latter showed up with insufficient players.
The result doomed Services to playing in Group B next year as they make the drop along with Lobster Pot.
The Inter Service Soccer Tournament will take place on Saturday at Bernard Park.
At 1 p.m, HMS Customs will take on Prison Service in the consolation final, while Police face Fire Service in the championship match at 3 p.m.
TENNIS TEN Jonathan Ingham took home top honours in Boys Division I during the Junior Development Tournament held at the Southampton Princess on Sunday.
Quinton Burgess locked up second place followed by David Dodwell, who finished third. Paul York and Jensen Bascome were closely behind, placing fourth and fifth respectively.
In Mixed Division II, Elizabeth Trimingham easily outdistanced her rivals.
Daniel Miller was second.
Rawson Hinds led the way in Mixed Division III with Kevin Richards finishing second.
In related news, Paul York was awarded the Joell Trophy as outstanding male of 1992 as the Outstanding Junior Tennis Awards were unveiled by the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association.
Claudia Haegele was the winner of the Allan Simmons Trophy as outstanding female.
GOLF GLF Chris Phillips is atop the leader board after first-round play and 56 holes in Belmont's Louis Moniz Memorial tournament. Phillips shot an even-par 70 to grab top spot in early-tournament action.
Three players tied for second place and five strokes behind Phillips were Bobby and Joey McRonald, and Mike Sousa. The trio will attempt to put pressure on Phillips during upcoming rounds.
Sousa and Phillips captured the monthly medal awards for their gross (75) and net (63) totals respectively.
