Rocky and friends get a kick out of camp

"Know your role!'' World Wrestling Federation superstar `The Rock' came up with that phrase as a berating gesture towards his would-be ring opponents on any given Sunday, Monday or Thursday night.

Bermuda's own Rocky prefers to use the calling as a way of encouraging and pulling youth together as a team on the soccer pitch.

Derrick (Rocky) Bean has always had a passion for soccer. As a youngster he loved to play and it appeared as if he might turn out to be a solid First Division player at North Village.

Torn ligaments in his right knee erased any such notions, forcing him to alter tack and turn to coaching.

Last year witnessed the birth of Rocky's Soccer Camp, where he acted mostly in a solo capacity, instructing several youngsters in the art of the game.

This year sees the camp stepping more to the forefront with the addition of Bermuda international goalkeeper and semi-professional Dwayne (Streaker) Adams to the mix as the pair stage The Rocky/Streaker Soccer Camp 2000 for youngsters aged 5-18 (male and female).

The camp is taking place at Bermuda College's Stonington Campus, having started yesterday and continuing to July 22.

"We offer basic knowledge of and a better understanding of the game,'' said Bean, who is also an assistant coach for Mohawk College women's team and Salt Fleet Soccer Club Youth 15 squad in Ontario, Canada. "We teach them the team aspect and camaraderie involved in the game.

"We stress that they listen to instruction and understand that coaches are here to provide them with knowledge and understanding that they become not only better players, but people.'' Additionally, females can take solace in the fact that the camp will include current University of North Carolina women's team members Leslie Gaston and Elizabeth Ball. Gaston is a defender for the top rated Tar Heels, while Ball is a versatile midfielder/forward, who was recruited from the soccer rich Dallas area.

Also joining is Brian Buckner, likewise of UNC fame.

"What the ladies bring is an outside aspect that they can better show our girls, as far as where they can go with soccer and the opportunities it affords,'' said Bean.

"Overall, we want to put out a positive message through sport. That while it is fun, it's about life as well and providing the youth with tools they'll need to progress and succeed, whether it be sport or in life.

"For me, I just enjoy seeing kids having fun doing something that they like to do and learning at the same time. If they're happy, I'm happy.'' Derrick (Rocky) Bean has been joined by overseas coaches for his second annual summer soccer camp.
