Rude girls, BAA renew challenge
of last year's final involving reigning champions Rude Girls and 1992 winners BAA Telecom.
Rude Girls were forced to come from behind against a pesky Somerset Terminators outfit before eventually winning 2-1 during the feature match at BAA field.
Joy Simons bolted the west enders into an early lead, but responses by Danita Tuzo and Christina Johnson accounted for the final score-line in favour of Rude Girls.
Currently second behind BAA in the league standings, Girls received a `Rude' awakening in the 19th minute from Simons.
The latter latched onto a left-wing cross from Raquel Wilkinson and was allowed to dribble uncontested toward goal before unleashing a hard, low shot from 20-yards that beat goalkeeper Essa Melakot to her left.
The champs surged back and after 10 minutes were back on level terms due to the combined efforts of Tuzo and Johnson.
A forward pass from midfield by Johnson fell for Tuzo, who outstripped the defence and fired from just inside the 18-yard box. 'Keeper Antoinette Williams managed to get a hand to the effort, but could not hold on and prevent the ball from crossing the goal-line.
Johnson got an assist from team-mate Chevonne Washington, in notching the score that put Girls ahead for good.
A quick attacking move witnessed Washington supplying a defence-splitting ball that allowed Johnson to run onto it and pick her spot past the helpless 'keeper.
Somerset, in desperation, fought back after the interval, placing their opponents under constant pressure. However, the equaliser proved elusive.
Rude Girls suffered one casualty when Washington had to be removed from the game with an injury to her jaw following a tackle.
An action-packed opening contest saw BAA put Dandy Stars to the whip in the form of a 4-0 hammering, with Terry-Lynn Paynter booting a hat-trick and aided by a single tally from Cassandra Wales, earning their way to the final.
Nevertheless, the opening moments were a concern to BAA as they found themselves pinned in their own half for the most part.
Stars' Rose Kirkpatrick brought the crowd to its feet with a fine solo effort that almost ended in a score when she dribbled around defender before unloading, only to have sweeper Earlene Wilkinson avert the danger with a goal saving header.
The tables soon turned and it was Wales putting BAA in front after 10 minutes, converting a Tanya Semos cross.
Inspired by this success, the home side stamped their authority on the proceedings, but were usurped by poor finishing as several clear chances fell by the wayside.
Striker Claudette Baisden, Paynter and Wales all had turns wearing the `goat' label, squandering certain scoring opportunities.
During this period, Stars were unable to move forward with much regularity, but in the 31st minute Carol Ann Wade managed to find a crack in the opposition's armour. However, she too suffered from the `shooting blues' in screwing her shot wide when well placed.
Paynter doubled the lead a minute before the interval, intercepting a goal-kick and slamming the ball through the hands of 'keeper Clevonna Symonds.
Five minutes following the restart Paynter knocked in her second, having her shot from the left side bounce in off the upright.
Stars continued to plug away, with Meredith Brady and Wade determined to bring their side back.
Still, they were constantly denied by stout defending by Zina Jones and her crew as well as 15-year-old midfielder Samantha Davis, all of which had superb games.
Another fine piece of execution by Paynter rounded out the night as she again took advantage of a weak goal-kick, only this time she floated the ball perfectly into the top right corner.
