Russell's treble sinks Trojans
Somerset's run of bad results continued last night at BAA field where an Ascento Russell hat-trick dumped them out of the Friendship Trophy.
Vasco completed the competition's semi-final line-up with a decisive win after falling behind to an early Somerset penalty.
The goal came against the run of play in the 17th minute when, from a corner on the left, Donovan Livginston -- in for the suspended Kentoine Jennings -- handled near the edge of the box as he challenged Rodre Wilson. Sean Simmons scored easily from the spot.
Even before the goal Vasco had the best opportunities as Keith Jennings put a header against the bar from a corner and then a long range shot from Derek Stapley was tipped over the bar by Winslow Williams.
After falling behind Vasco kept on the pressure and they were rewarded in the 26th minute when Russell opened his account after a good move down the right saw him meet the cross and tuck the ball past Williams at the near post.
Before the half Vasco struck again, this time when Towlson met Sinclair Gibbons' cross from a corner and planted his header into the far post.
Somerset's defence was in disarray again three minutes before the break when another move down the right, this time involving Clay Smith, saw the cross to the far post met by Russell who placed his shot into the bottom corner.
Though Somerset had more in their attack in the second half after bringing on Jelani Scott at the start of the half for David Rahman, Vasco's lead was never seriously threatened.
Vasco made a double substitution in the 75th minute when Kuma Smith and Tillman Darrell replaced Ottis Steede and Dwight Basden.
Russell was on hand to complete his hat-trick eight minutes from the end when he scored with a low shot from close range to make it 4-1 and put paid to any hopes Somerset might have had of a fightback.

In regulation time, Paget took a 30th minute lead through Dale Russell but White replied after 78 minutes.
