Sandys Boat Club with nine boats participating at Mangrove Bay.

Of the five race days held in 1993, this was by far the most competitive, with the boats spurred by 15-knot north-easterly winds.

Six different skippers grabbed first-place finishes, an unusual scenario considering past races where only one or two sailors would dominate.

Michael Carey got off to a quick start and took a commanding lead in the first race that he never relinquished. Andreas Lewin captured the second race and then it was Peter Bromby claiming the next two races.

After Craig Davis won the fifth race, a three-way battle ensued between Davis, Bromby and Lewin for the championship of the 10-race series.

Martin Siese found a sudden wind shift to his liking and won the sixth race and then Lewin, who had racked up a series of second and third-place finishes, finally tasted another first-place finish in the ninth race. Davis, who was on the verge of a second-place finish in the seventh race, capsised while gybing and fell to seventh spot.

Moore was the sixth skipper to win a race when he took line honours in the eighth race. Then Lewin continued his strong performance by winning the ninth race and Bromby followed that by taking the last race of the day.

After all the points were tallied it was Lewin who had won the series with 16.25 points, two points ahead of Bromby, who had 18.25 points, and two-and-a-half points in front of Davis with 18.75 points.

Ted Wood finished with 32 points, good for a hold on fourth place, thanks to an afternoon of solid fourth or fifth-place finishes in most races.

Siese (36.75) narrowly beat out Moore (37.75) for fifth spot and Michael Carey was not far behind with 41.75 points.

Veteran Comet and Sunfish sailor Howard Lee placed eighth with 52 points, ahead of Steve Hannon who had 64.

CYCLING CYC Clarke Tear, who posted the best time of all racers during time trials, was left chasing the leaders during Bermuda Bicycling Association racing on Sunday at the US Naval Annex in Sandys.

The race served as a qualifier for the Heritage Day race, which will be held on May 24. Clarke needed a 50-second pit stop after the first lap to repair damage to a rear wheel and spent the remainder of the race playing catch-up.

The overall field was broken up as a result of various mechanical woes suffered by the various participants, but the race was marked by the aggressive riding of Mike Lee, Jeff Payne and Dana Henry with exemplary performances by Dwyer Williams and Darren Dowling.

An interesting sub-plot in the competition was between Mervin Van Putten and Durwood Cann in the novice division. Van Putten had posted a superior time in the warm-up trials, and he eventually beat Cann by one second producing the afternoon's most exciting finish.

A promising start by Louis Muso went for naught when he suffered a flat tyre and exited the race.

By the 10th lap, racers Mike Lee and Jeff Payne were battling in a sprint worthy of a cat-and-mouse chase, with Lee pulling away at the 150-metre mark and finishing the race in 1:38:07, followed by Payne two seconds later at 1:38:09. Dwyer Williams clocked in at 1:40:04 and then it was Henry staying ahead of Tear to nail down third place in the seniors' category.

Linda Dillon and Trevor Hodges won their respective divisions based on their maximum points.

In time trials, Tear posted the best time of any class at 14:49 followed by Henry (14:51) and Payne (15:06). Novices Muso (16:58) and Dillon (17:40) turned in the best times in their categories during the time trials.

Also, the Spring Term starts on May 8 and runs for eight weeks.

The BLTA is seeking donations in the form of tennis equipment to aid its junior programme. Items such as ball machines, a VCR recorder, a TV monitor, rebound nets, a video camera, and tennis library tapes.

CHESS CHS Eric Keen continues to be the man to beat in the Bank of Bermuda Chess Championships following a draw last week against highly-rated Nick Faulkes.

However, Keen had to pull out all the stops, after finding himself in a complicated end-game position, to stave off defeat and retain a half-point lead over Faulkes, Harry Kast and Nigel Chudleigh.

Tonight's key matches have Keen taking on Chudleigh, while Kast and Faulkes likewise clash.

SNOOKER SNO Steve Dunleavy spoiled young Stephen Roberts' attempt for a Bermuda Open double last week with a 4-1 victory in the singles final.

Roberts led by 20 points or more in every game but Dunleavy's experience told in the end. The final score did not reflect the closeness of the match-up as four games were decided on the pink ball and one on the black.

"His turn will come,'' said Dunleavy of Roberts who at 22 is less than half his age.

Roberts did meet with success in the doubles final as he and Mike Tatem defeated Brian Haxton and Phil Lambert 3-2.
