Sandys clinch ko title
Saturday night at BAA when they beat Nationals 3-1.
Joe Botelho beat Danny Ray 2-1 and Ronnie Thorne made it 2-0 when he beat Reggie Cabral 2-0 despite Cabral's perfect 180. Charles Roberts kept the Nationals team alive when he downed Norman Davison 2-0.
The pressure was then on Boyd Lewis to defeat David Coddrington and force a fifth and final leg. However, it wasn't to be as Coddrington won 2-1 to seal Sandys' win.
In the semi-finals, Nationals I beat First Division league winners Flannagans II 3-1 and Sandys Sports Club got past RAA 3-2.
Boyd Lewis hit 180 for Nationals but he still went down to George Connnor, although team-mates Reggie Cabral, Charles Roberts and Danny Ray all won against Clyde Brooks, Gavin Corcoran and Terry Quin to take Nationals into the final.
In the second semi-final, Sandys Sports Club turned up with only four players, hoping that their late player would come out in the later part of the draw.
But that didn't happen as Botelho was forced to default to RAA's Terry Cartwright in the first game, before Stuart Matthews and Ronnie Thorne chalked up wins against Gregor McQueen and Steven Hayward to make it 2-1 in Sandys' favour.
Vernon Daniels was in a do or die situation against Raymond Henderson and he came through to send the contest into a fifth game between Gregory Nesbitt of RAA and Norman Dawson of Sandys. Dawson was able to hang on for a close 2-1 win to take Sandys into the final.
In Group B, heavy favourites Sandys Boat Club were denied the title by a determined Nationals II team which won 3-1 in the final.
Paul Lindo beat Ray Martin Sr but the rest of the games went to Nationals as Martin Jr, Mark Lewis and David Hayward of Nationals beat Craig Young, Bruce Gibbons and Peter Bromby Sr. In the semi-finals, Nationals II won by default over Wharf Tavern while Sandys Boat Club had an easy 3-0 win over War Vets with Richard Bernardo, Bruce Gibbons and Bromby winning their games against Paul Moniz, Mark Aubrey and Andre Burgess.
The Grand League finals and President's Cup will now take place on May 13 at Nationals. The Grand League teams are Flanagans II and Vasco I while the President's Cup teams are Sandys Boat Club and Vasco II.
