SNOOKER SNO Defending champions Brian Haxton and Phil Lambert got off to a flying start in the Four Star Pizza Doubles Open snooker tournament with a convincing 2-0 win over last year's semifinalists Steve Dunleavy and Andy Wright.
Old Colony Club was the site of two other matches as the duo of David Woodhead and Richard Drennan ousted Greg Falzone and Glenn Flood, while Wally Tucker and Hilgrove Iris got the better of S.A. Moniz and Timmy Hayward.

ATHLETICS ATH The first in a series of CARIFTA trials at National Stadium on Saturday saw several athletes turning in outstanding performances, some making the qualifying times for the first time while others who had already qualified and managed to excel once again.
Among those qualifying for the first time was Nakia Pearson who met the standard in both the boys under-17 age group of the 200 metres and 100 metres.
He had a time of 22.8 in the 200 metres and 11.2 in the 100 metres.
Donte Hunt, who had already qualified in the boys under-17 200 metres, did so again when he won the event in 22.6, but he qualified for the 100 metres as well with a time of 11.1 after finishing second behind winner Atiba Tucker who qualified also with a time of 11.1.
Hunt was also in fine form in the triple jump, qualifying with a leap of 13.64 while Aaron Bean met the qualifying standard in the same age group of the long jump with a 6.76 effort.
Stephen Woodley, who was one of the most successful athletes at last year's CARIFTA Games, continued to show good form in high jumping when he bettered the qualifying standard in the boy's under-20 division with a mark of 1.95 metres.
The girls were not as successful in this first trial with only Jarita Dill reaching qualifying standards, doing so in the girls under-17 400 metres with a time of 60 seconds.
In the same age division of the 800 metres, Vernae Ingham learned that close was not good enough by just coming up short of the qualifying mark of 2:30.0 with a time of 2:30.3.
In the girls under-17 200 metres, Monique Hunt and Jarita Dill had both previously qualified but still beat the standard on Saturday with times of 26.3 each in the event.
GOLF GLF Bermuda's Jim Mylrea and frequent American visitor Ted Kenerson are the early leaders of the Founder's Trophy tournament after an carding impressive net 63 in yesterday's opening round at Mid Ocean Club.
But the leading team will have no room for error in today's second round with two teams close on their heels on 64. They are the teams of Edward and Thomas Ryan, and George Stevens and Bruce Beagley all four of whom are from the United States.
Five more teams offering a serious challenge are two strokes behind the leaders on 65 and these include long-time regulars in the competition, Charles Hartnett and William McCall of Winchester, Massachusetts, who finished second to last year's winners Tom Stearns and Alan Leyland of Bermuda.
The other four teams holding down third place are Herb Klock and Robert Shields of United States, George Hammond (Bermuda) and Charles Brennan (United States), E.McLaughlin of Bermuda and Donald Bauer of United States and Charles and Soc Tseckares of the United States.
The race is just as tight in the gross division where Bermuda's Michael Dunkley and Paul Evans of United States lead with a 71.
Hartnett and McCall share second place just one stroke behind with Americans Richard Stimets and Richard Weller and compatriots Thomas Wall and James Taylor.
SOFTBALL SOF The Bernard Park softball diamond was busy over the weekend with a total of nine games played over the space of two days.
One of the more intriguing clashes occurred on Sunday in Division `D' where Advertising Associates and Business Systems hooked up in a thrilling encounter that produced a whopping 41 runs, with the former emerging 22-19 winners.
Truly outstanding on the night was Advertising Associates' Richard Adlam as his bat produced 10 RBI on four-for-five hitting, including three home runs.
Dane Brown of Business Systems made it a close affair, stroking six RBI of his own, but this was not enough to offset Adlam's onslaught.
Another close affair had Butterfield and Steinhoff edge past Alexander Insurance Managers 15-14 behind Trevor Brookes' perfect four-for-four night with seven RBI.
Remaining Sunday games saw International Risk Management down Anfossi and Butterfield 9-6, PTB equal their record at .500 with an 11-4 win over Centre Re., Showbizz outlast Marsh and McLennan 9-5 and Anfossi and Butterfield defeat Kemp and Whittle.
On Saturday, Kemp and Whittle beat Flying Chef Flyers 14-12, Prison Officers blasted Anfossi and Butterfield 19-4 (five innings) and Showbizz topped Skandia Sabres 19-8.
POOL POO A total team effort served to spur Hamilton Parish to victory over Sandys Boat Club in recent pool action.
Richard Foggo, Michael Burgess and David O'Brien all scored 47 points to lead the eastern club to a 227-150 win over their western rivals.
The result keeps Parish within a half-game of league leaders Swinging Doors, who were idle. Stuart Matthews was high scorer for Sandys with 34.
Meanwhile, Mariners surprised Vasco 190-182 with Alan Mair beating Manuel Furtado 10-5 in the final game.
High scorers for Mariners were Mair with 46 and Gavin Corcoran who had 45, while Antonio Revoredo replied with 41 for Vasco.
Kyle Thompson recorded a perfect 50 to lead Robin Hood to a 214-178 triumph against the Bermuda Ladies.
The lone bright spot for the Ladies was Lovette Dickinson with 41.

HOCKEY HOC Saturday proved to be a very unlucky day for PHC Canaries as, despite appearing to be the stronger team in both matches, they still crashed to defeat.
Bluebirds beat them 2-1 in the B League match after Canaries had taken an early lead through Fiona Colston only to see Bluebirds equalise before the half and then Georgina Adlam score the winner in the second half.
Canaries also lost 2-1 to North Village Longtails in the A League match. Lisa Rawlins opened the scoring for Longtails with Jackie White equalising only to see Joanne Wilson notch the winner for Longtails.
On Sunday, Police Orioles defeated Coca-Cola Cardinals 1-0 in the B League, the game's only goal coming from Marcia Ford.
Cardinals won the A League match against Police Orioles 1-0. It was an important win for Cardinals who needed the result to maintain their joint lead with Longtails. Julie Monks scored the winner in the second half.
TABLE TENNIS PP Prison Officers are at home to Southampton Princess tonight in a make-up match from December 10.
