Shannon's cup overflowing!
their summer break, Bermuda and Devonshire Colts captain Shannon Burgess still has a busy April schedule ahead of him.
And if Bermuda get past Antigua in their two-leg, second round World Cup qualifier it will mean an even shorter off-season for Burgess and his Bermuda team-mates. Burgess led Devonshire Colts to another success in the Friendship Trophy, beating PHC 3-1 in Monday night's final.
Now the focus will quickly switch to Bermuda's World Cup clash with Antigua on Sunday before the Colts skipper takes his club back on the field next Wednesday for the semi-final of the FA Cup.. .another trophy Colts are attempting to defend.
Success against Southampton Rangers would mean four matches in a 13-day period in a month when a player's season is usually winding down.
"Actually it's really becoming difficult to stay focused because every game is big,'' said Burgess shortly after receiving the brand new Friendship Trophy on Monday from Health and Social Services Minister Nelson Bascome.
"Of course, the World Cup games are the biggest games to play, so you have to try to get up for the local games and not really worry about the next game.
"I find if you go into a game worrying about the next game and trying not to get injured you go into tackles half-heartedly and you end up getting injured.
You just have to be mature about it.'' As they did last year against Vasco, Colts beat the league champions in the Friendship final.
"We didn't think about that,'' Burgess stressed. "This team came to defend what they say was theirs. We are the defending champions and we felt we weren't going to let them take this trophy from us.
"PHC gave a great fight, they went down 2-0 and came back and made a match of it, so my hat's off to them. Playing the league champions gave us a little bit more motivation.
"We stepped it up and Aljame (Zuill) and Marvin (Belboda) played well up front and really did the job for us.'' The win gave Colts the distinction of ending the old millennium and starting the new as Friendship champions. Now they're looking to do the same with the FA Cup.
With the Charity, Dudley Eve and Friendship trophies in their possession, Colts are already the most succesful team this season in terms of the number of trophies won.
Before last season Colts had lost in 18 straight cup finals, but now they are proving to be a good cup team again. They have appeared in 15 Friendship finals, losing 11 and winning just four.
"Yeah, we're starting to win finals and it feels great, but we are still behind the amount of finals we've lost,'' said their captain. "We still have some catching up to do.
"As I said, take one game at a time. If we play to the level we know we can play at, I think we can compete no matter what the occasion.'' Taking his own advice, Burgess won't be thinking too far ahead to the FA Cup, especially when there is an important World Cup tie coming up.
"I guess it's World Cup up until Sunday night and then try to focus on the semi-finals,'' said Burgess who recently began writing a World Cup column for the Mid Ocean News.
"Of course, World Cup is at the forefront now and hopefully I can prepare myself for that.'' Shannon Burgess: No time to rest for the Colts skipper during a hectic April schedule.
