Simons hat-trick keeps Hornets buzzing
The Dandy Town bandwagon rolled on last night, as a second-half hat-trick by Darron Simons put Cougars out of the Friendship Trophy.
Andrew Bascome's Premier Division leaders were good value for their win in front of a lively crowd at Devonshire Rec., but only found top gear in the last third of the game.
Devarr Boyles and substitute Kevin Hurdle netted Town's other goals, while Devon Brangman struck Cougars' lone reply.
A physical Cougars side battled for every ball in an even and scrappy first quarter and former Town player Heys Wolfe had the ball in the net for the home side on 15 minutes, but it was ruled out for offside.
Cougars' Kori Goddard cleared Raymond Beach's shot off the line, before Town drew first blood on the half hour.
Seyoum Tuzo's cross from the right evaded a crowd of players and found its way to the unmarked Boyles who slipped the ball through the legs of advancing goalkeeper Ricardo Brangman and into the net.
After Ricardo Brangman made a fine save to deny Simons, Cougars equalised seven minutes into the second half when Town failed to clear Wolfe's inswinging corner and Devon Brangman swept home from close range.
Beach unlocked the Cougars defence with a delightful pass hooked back over his shoulder in the 58th minute and Simons did the rest with a low left-footed drive to give Town a 2-1 lead.
And 12 minutes later it was 3-1 when a poor clearance from a corner fell to Simons whose fierce shot was too hot for Ricardo Brangman to handle.
Substitute Hurdle grabbed the fourth with a low, right-footed drive from the edge of the penalty area in the 83rd minute.
But Town saved the best until last, as Simons completed his hat-trick in spectacular style, hitting a glorious, dipping left-footed volley into the top right-hand corner of the net from way out on the left to make it 5-1.

Boulevard 3 St. George's 1 Boulevard sent First Division leaders St. George's crashing out of the Shield last night.
The Blazers are bottom of the First Division without a league win, 20 points behind St. George's, but took the lead on 19 minutes through Mitchelle Trott.
Michael Parsons grabbed the second in the 55th minute and Gregory Johnson made it 3-0 nine minutes later, as the Blazers' young team, inspired by a superb display by Lashun Dill took St. George's apart.
Herbie Bascome pulled one back for Colts in the 69th minute.
