Six rookies named in Red Stripe squad

that will have six debutants including the surprise selection of opening batsman Sheridan Ming of PHC and young medium pace bowler Mackie Crane of St.

George's.

Cut from the previously reduced squad of 17 announced by the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control last week are batsman Mark Ray, allrounder Lionel Cann and wicketkeeper/batsman Dean Minors.

The absentees are noticeable because the trio would have normally been included in the squad if the selection was based on merit and availability -- but no Board officials could be reached last night to offer any comment on the make-up of the team.

In addition to naming opening bat Ming and Crane, the remaining players with no experience in the Red Stripe Bowl are batsmen Wendell White of Somerset and Jermaine Warner of Bailey's Bay, batsman Curtis Jackson of Cleveland and left-arm medium pacer Dennis Pilgrim of Bailey's Bay. The inclusion of Ray, Cann and Minors would have given the squad a much more formidable look and probably enhanced their chances against the might of the Caribbean during the competition in Antigua and Anguilla from October 9th -16th. Instead the Board have come up with a squad that on paper at least appears to be a considerable weakened team whose batting seems to be decent at best, without top scorer Albert Steede in particular, and whose bowling lacks depth without anybody with any significant pace to offer the batsmen any real challenge.

The absence of Cann in the bowling attack could be a real handicap to the squad.

With Minors not included the wicketkeeping chores will be given to Kwame Tucker who has played that position previously in the tournament.

Bermuda tour squad: Charlie Marshall (captain), Richard Basden, Hasan Durham, Curtis Jackson, Dennis Pilgrim, Janeiro Tucker, Kwame Tucker, Jermaine Warner, Wendell White, Mackie Crane, Clay Smith, Dennis Archer, Herbie Bascome, Sheridan Ming.
