Smith charges in to cup contention
round of the Bermuda Junior Golf Association Fecchio Cup at Belmont yesterday.
Local boy Smith climbed up to joint second in the 15-plus division thanks to birdies at the first, fourth, 12th and 15th holes for a 36-hole total of 144.
Leader William Haddrell, a 16-year-old from Surrey, England, could only manage a 74 yesterday, but that was enough to keep him two strokes ahead of Smith and Ryan Mello, who also shot 74.
Haddrell had fired a two-under 68 on the opening day.
In the 13-14 age group, Jaryd Dillas continued to set the pace, shooting 73 for a two-round total of 145 and extending his lead to nine strokes over Sean Harlington.
Tyler Marshall has an even more commanding lead in the 12-and-under age group, after carding a sparkling 75 to open up a 14-shot advantage over second-placed Shane Kelly.
In the 10-and-under category, Tyler's brother Blair Marshall lost the lead to Mark Phillips, whose nine-hole round of 43 gave him a one-stroke lead going into the third round.
The tournament concludes today at Belmont, with the prizegiving immediately following play.
