Smith loses skipper's job
away leg of Bermuda's World Cup qualifying match with Haiti next weekend, it was disclosed last night.
Smith failed to show up for Bermuda's match with Haiti on April 26 after being relegated to the subs bench. He had been captain of his country just one match, taking over from Dennis Brown in the match against Norway in February.
Manager Gary Darrell confirmed during yesterday's training session at Warwick Academy field that Hereford professional Meshach Wade would keep the captaincy for the match in Haiti on May 24. He stressed though that Smith, who trained with the team on Tuesday and was at the session last night, is still a part of his plans.
"I told him what I had recommended (as punishment) but to also be prepared for something more than I had recommended,'' the manager said. "It's really hitting home now that he won't be going to Haiti. He apologised to the team.
This is the first time he hasn't trained.'' Darrell admitted that Wade still hasn't performanced as well as he can for his country.
"His performance has to come up, and he's aware of it,'' he said of the youngster. "He hasn't really performed as we know he can for a while. He just came back from surgery against Haiti and worked extremely hard.'' Darrell will confirm his tour party after a practice match tomorrow evening at the National Stadium, though there are now some minor knocks to key players to consider. Defender Albert Caisey and midfielder Kentoine Jennings both sustained ankle knocks in training this week and last evening striker Phillip Clarke got a slight hamstring pull while doing some sprints.
"I don't think it's anything serious,'' Clarke said as he sat on the side.
"It was from not warning up properly, I was running a little bit late and just jumped right into it. Right now it feels pretty good.'' Clarke's injury is obviously a concern for Darrell as he came on as sub and laid on Shawn Goater's late winner with a strong run through the Haitian defence. "He's doing the things we know he's capable of doing and some things only he can do. I really like him when he's facing the goal. Last night he went on a run and only desperation by a couple of defenders stopped him from going all the way.'' Darrell doesn't expect to make any major changes to the squad for the Haiti trip. "There is no need for a whole lot of changes from the squad which played in the home match, maybe looking at taking another defender and going with one less attacker,'' Darrell said.
Darrell added that the closure of the National Stadium left the squad with some uncertainty about where to train, but he says the players have been very receptive to training on the surface at Warwick Academy.
Trainer Nick Jones has been putting the team through rigorous fitness training, something Darrell thinks could be the key in this second match.
"It's no question the guys are feeling good about themselves and their fitness level,'' said Darrell.
"Such a thing was made of it in the Norway game and there always is a problem when we're playing international games at that level. Our fitness always fails us about 20 minutes from the end because the demand is so high over the 90 minutes.'' ALBERT SMITH -- Dropped as Bermuda's captain after just one game.
