Soccer girls seek opponents ahead of Caribbean Champs

Bermuda's women's soccer team have had their hopes of hosting a Division II college team ahead of their Carribbean Football Championships semi-final in July dashed.

And as a result the women may look to the under-15 boys team for important match practice ahead of their trip to Haiti next month, assistant coach Wendell Furbert disclosed this week.

"Vance (Brown) and I have toyed with the idea of a match or two against Kenny Thompson's under-15 team, but we have not spoken with Kenny on that,'' said Furbert.

"That's about the right match-up, but I know they will beat the women,'' he accepted.

The boys will also find themselves in Haiti in July for the Caribbean Junior Championships. They hold a comfortable first leg lead against the United States Virgin Islands, in a tie that should have been decided on the weekend.

However, the match was not played and now the two countries are attempting to agree on a new date.

Furbert thinks a match against the youngsters could benefit the women in their build-up to the semi-finals in Haiti where they will play Haiti, Jamaica and Guadeloupe to see who advances to the final in Trinidad, which is also the venue for the other semi-final matches in August.

Bermuda are ranked 84th in the recently released world rankings for women's soccer, lower than their three upcoming opponents.

Bermuda's rankings came on the basis of their two victories over Bahamas, winning 3-0 at home and then 6-0 in the away leg. Their real test still awaits them.

"The attitude of the team, the coaches and the administrators is a confident one, but as I have stated before we don't know the calibre of the other teams,'' said Furbert.

"We're going to put our best foot forward to try to put these women on the map.'' Some of the younger members from the women's team were involved in co-ed matches on the weekend against the Virginia Pyros at the National Stadium, winning 3-1 in the first leg on Saturday and 7-1 on Sunday for a 10-2 aggregate win.

The rule governing the matches required that there be five male and five female in the outfield on both teams at all times, with the goalkeeper being either male or female.

With the local team choosing to play females in goal, Timmy Figureido played in the outfield along with the likes of Kentoine, Kevin and Keith Jennings, Kenny Thompson, Shannon Burgess, Meshach Wade, Aljame Zuill, Karl Roberts and Corey Dowling.

"We were very encouraged by the performances of the youngsters in this past match and by what we have been doing in training as well,'' Furbert stated.

"By mid-June we should have all of our players based here at home and in full training. Nicole Jones is flying in in two weeks and everyone else is home now.'' PHC's Waynesha Bean was voted the Women's League's player of the Year at last weekend's Awards Ceremony at Sonington Hotel. Bean received the Charlie Marshall Trophy while an award presented by another former BFA president, Donald Dane, was won by Diallo Sharrieff of Prospect as the coach of the year.

Dionne Pitt of PHC was named the young player of the year, receiving a trophy sponsored by founder of the women's league, Alicia Zuill. Chevonne Furbert of Rude Girls was the top scorer for the season, winning the trophy put up by former player Janice Hankey.

Little Venice Rookies took the Gregory Grimes Trophy for Fair Play.
