Somerset and PHC in battle for final berth
Two days after helping PHC open a four-point lead at the top of the Premier Division, Somerset themselves take aim at the Zebras as they battle for the second spot in the Friendship final at Devonshire Rec. tonight.
The Zebras have been using Somerset's ground while their own is closed for repairs. And while the Trojans did them a huge favour by beating Premier Division title challengers North Village 3-1 on Sunday, they can't expect to find Somerset in a generous mood in tonight's semi-final.
While PHC now have an excellent chance of landing the league championship, Someset will be determined that they won't also get their hands on the Friendship Trophy. Tonight's winners will meet cup holders Devonshire Colts in the April 23 final.
The game is crucial for Somerset as it represents their last opportunity to win a trophy this season. And if they bring the same intensity to the match that they showed against Village on Sunday, then they will have a good chance of reaching their first Friendship final since 1995.
PHC also enjoyed a good win on the weekend, beating Vasco to strengthen their grip on first place. Their front line will have an additional option tonight with the availability of top scorer Stephen Astwood following a one-match ban.
In tonight's Shield semi-final, Hamilton Parish and St. George's will battle for the second time in three days. St. George's won Sunday's league match 3-2 to move level on points with Parish, both with identical 4-4-4 records from 12 outings.
St. George's reached last year's final where they were beaten by PHC. Social Club are already through to the final.
It isn't just Bermuda's footballers who will be heading to the Caribbean later this week for an important World Cup first round, first leg qualifier.
So too will three of the Island's leading officials after FIFA listed referee Stuart Crockwell and linesmen Lyndon Raynor and Anthony Mouchette to a World Cup assignment in Anguilla.
The trio, who worked together in an Olympic qualifying match between the Dominican Republic and Haiti last September, will officiate in the Anguilla-Bahamas match on Sunday.
