increased demand for the sport on the Island.

From a position where the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association was struggling to survive a few short years ago, interest is now such that there are not enough courts for those that want to play.

Bermuda's director of squash, Ross Triffitt, said discussions were being held over enhancing what was currently on offer at Middle Road in Devonshire, but he was reluctant to talk about the precise details.

"The courts are very busy. They are pretty much crammed to capacity.

Obviously we make a lot courts available to hire to members but it's really reaching the point and stage where we do need some extra courts,'' he said.

Asked if there was room at the current location to build on, Triffitt said: "Not exactly, we would have to get involved with someone else or look at another venue to build more courts. The possibilities are being explored at the moment.'' Triffitt said he could not put a timescale on when the plans might come to fruition, but he hoped it was sooner rather than later.

"I wish it was tomorrow. We are hoping it will be soon and it is something we are investigating but ultimately we are owned by members, we are a members' club so it will be their decision as to what happens,'' he said.

In the meantime, the association is holding two high profile events with a dual purpose -- to increase membership further and to raise funds to send the national squad to the Caribbean.

On May 19 the BSRA is holding the Docksiders World Class Exhibition featuring international players alongside Bermuda's number one player, Gary Plumstead.

Former world number 23, Narelle Tippett Krizek from Australia will be taking on compatriot and former world number 31 Melissa Vacca.

Later on former world number two and BSRA pro Brett Martin will take on current Island pro Plumstead. The matches begin at 7 p.m. and tickets cost $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

The night will run between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. and will include free squash, coaching, gym orientations, nutritional consultations and exhibition matches featuring top local players.

Referring to the exhibition, Triffitt said: "It's a fundraising event to raise money for our junior team and senior team to compete in the Caribbean Championships.

"We did the same thing very successfully last year to raise funds for our team to go to the World Junior Championships.'' Triffitt said this was a night not to be missed for anyone who was interested in the game.

"It is going to be the best squash that you will see on the Island this year.

Also because it's an exhibition match, although they will be playing seriously, there will also be some interaction with the crowd and the players will be available to answer questions afterwards,'' he said.

"For anyone who hasn't seen squash before they will be able to see some very athletic, dynamic players playing some amazing shots. It should be quite exciting.'' If anyone would like any information about either event contact the club on 292-6881.
