St David's get a break in FA Cup re-draw
St. David's got their first `break' of the season yesterday when their FA Cup first round match against in-form Commercial League team, Lobster Pot, was withdrawn from the first round.
BFA officials David Sabir and Craig Tyrrell put all the matches back into the draw yesterday so as to pull out two teams who will get a first round bye.
That will enable the competition to move into the round of 16 after the 13 first round matches which will be held tomorrow and November 14.
The 13 eventual winners will then join cup holders Devonshire Colts, Lobster Pot and St. David's in the round of 16, though the Pot-St. David's match will still be played...in the second round in January.
That should suit the new Premier Division boys who now have more time to settle into their season and overcome injuries which have hit the team.
Chae Simmons, their key attacking player, would have missed the Lobster Pot game because of a one-match ban for too many cards.
St. David's have lost their first three league games and Lobster Pot, with two wins and a draw in their own Commercial division, were ready to inflict the big upset of the first round.
Tomorrow, six matches will now be played with the North Village-Wolves encounter at Bernard Park getting top billing. The teams met recently in the Martonmere Cup semi-final which Wolves won 1-0 in extra-time with just nine men.
All agree Village had enough chances in that match to have won easily but Wolves made them pay with Nakia Smith's header in the second period of extra time as Wolves advanced to the Martonmere final for the first time.
This should be an interesting second meeting between the teams with just one goal likely to separate them again. Which way it will go is anybody's guess.
Village player-coach Kenny Thompson did not need to put his gear on last weekend but he may well do so tomorrow.
Dandy Town coach Mark Trott was at the BFA yesterday for the brief draw, hoping his team did not come out of the hat alongwith opponents St. George's Colts. He wanted that match to go ahead tomorrow to allow his players as much match time as possible ahead of the November 11 final against Wolves.
The two teams drew 3-3 in midweek but it shouldn't be that close when Town make the trek to Wellington Oval where St. George's player-coach Neil Paynter will be hoping to inflict an upset against his former team. Sean Smith of Town is serving a suspension after a red card in midweek.
But if Town play up to their potential this should be a mismatch as St.
George's are only a shadow of the team they were three years ago when they won the Friendship Trophy and finished third in the First Division.
Also expected to join Dandy Town in the round of 16 are league champions Vasco who meet Bermuda Pest Control in the 12.30 match at Bernard Park. Vasco could have Meshach Wade back in their lineup, but Keith Jennings will serve a one-match ban. Wade has been abroad having trial with David Bascome's indoor team, Harrisburg Heat, whose coach is reportedly interesting in signing him.
Another interesting match will be at Police field where Fire Service meet BAA Wanderers in an all-Commercial League match-up. Fire picked up their first win of the season last weekend and their confidence will be high against the current A Division leaders.
Commercial champions Robin Hood will certainly be happy with the draw which pitted them against B Division side Prison Officers. The other match sees Hamilton Parish taking on Valley at St. David's in a match they should win easily.
Parish have been scoring goals in abundance in the league, four against Somerset Eagles, two against Paget and seven against Prospect, and they will be expecting much the same against Valley.
The Youth League will kick off a weekend later than orginially scheduled, starting on November 6 rather than October 30.
