St. George's end Vasco's streak

The longest unbeaten streak of the season season came to an end last night at Devonshire Rec. when St. George's handed Vasco their first defeat after 11 matches.

The large crowd on hand was treated to one of the best matches of the season, as St. George's took a 2-0 lead at the half, and then had to hang on desperately to a one-goal lead as Vasco came back.

The goal by Marlon Outerbridge that rocked Vasco back on their heels as early as the fifth minute must surely rate as one of the best of the season.

It came at the end of a move involving Stevie Dickinson, Derek Wright and Dean Minors with Outerbridge running on and striking a fierce shot from 25 yards that had the net bulging with its impact.

Vasco came charging right back and might have equalised but for a glaring miss from Corey Hill in the 14th minute, when he shot wide of an open goal after a flighted cross from the left by Sinclair Gibbons caught goalkeeper Troy Hall out of poisition near the edge of the box.

Vasco dominated briefly as the game continued on at a high level. But St.

George's were soon making things difficult for them again.

Clay Smith smashed a shot against the crossbar in the 34th minute with Timmy Figureido beaten.

Vasco had Voorhees Astwood, who hasn't played since last November, warming up when St. George's scored a second goal eight minutes before the break.

Laws exchanged passes with Smith in the box and Laws stooped to head downard into Figureido's far post.

Astwood came on in the 40th minute for Franklyn Simmons who was clearly unhappy with the decision, throwing his shirt on the ground as he stormed to the dressing room.

Before the half ended further emotion was shown when Corey Hill and Stevie Dickinson were booked in an off-the-ball scuffle after Hill reacted to a challenge.

Dean Bailey, late because of Regiment duty, replaced Gregg Foggo in his usual position at left-back for the start of the second half which was just as fierce. A couple of bad misses early in the half cost Vasco dearly as their finishing was slack.

Striker Dwight Basden managed to clear in front of an open net with a diving header following a Hill cross on the left.

Vasco made another substitution, bringing on Paul Towlson for his first appearance of the season in the 64th minute and he pulled a goal back in the 77th minute to set the stage for a tense closing period. Basden missed with another header right in front of goal in the 81st minute after another Hill, by which time the writing was starting to appear on the wall.

There were four other bookings, Gregg Foggo, Neil Paynter, Dwight Basden, Irving Burgess and Dean Minors.
