Steede gets captaincy call
Marshall as captain for the 10-day Barbados tour, which starts on Friday.
Steede, overlooked for the six-match tour of England last summer, was originally chosen as vice-captain for the Barbados trip. But the minor heart attack suffered by Marshall last week forced the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control selectors to meet this weekend to select a replacement.
Marshall's place in the squad will be taken by his Bailey's Bay team-mate Jermaine Outerbridge, a promising all-rounder, while Clevie Wade has been named as the new vice-captain.
"With Albert not being terribly experienced, Clevie is the ideal man to help him out,'' said president Ed Bailey yesterday. "We thought these two were the best combination.'' The squad contains two former Bermuda captains in Arnold Manders and Allan Douglas as well as seasomed campaigner Noel Gibbons, so Steede will have plenty of experience to call on during the five 50-over matches.
Bermuda's opponents are club teams Maple Club, Police and St. Catherine, the Barbados Under-19s and the Barbados national team, which will likely include players with Test experience.
"I'm pleased about it (appointment) though it's unfortunate the way I got the position,'' said 24-year-old Steede yesterday.
"My aim is to do well and it shouldn't be too difficult because I do have some experienced players. I feel more confident with experienced players around me than players who are not that experienced. I'm looking forward to doing my best.'' Former West Indies Test greats Sir Gary Sobers and Gordon Greenidge will help conduct net sessions at Kensington Oval while former Bermuda national team coach George Rock will also assist with net sessions soon after the team arrives.
Bailey expressed pleasure with the progress made by Marshall, while he was also happy to see Outerbridge given the opportunity to gain some experience.
"Charlie's wife was in contact with me and kept me up with his progress, which I'm pleased about,'' said Bailey. "The doctors feel he will recover sufficiently to resume his cricket career. We're very encouraged by that because we don't have Charlie Marshalls born every day.'' Added the president about Outerbridge: "The selectors are really taken up with this boy's ability. We would like to have had Glenn Smith, but he has an injury.''
