Streaker picks up pieces after 8-0 shellacking

A day after suffering perhaps his most humiliating defeat -- an 8-0 mauling at the hands of North Village -- Dwayne (Streaker) Adams was looking on the bright side, glancing ahead rather than dwelling on the past.

Not appearing downcast nor sounding any less confident, the Bermuda national team goal-keeper stressed that this was only one result and that a long journey lay ahead for himself and his BAA team-mates.

This after being unmercifully bombarded by his former Village crew as well as a bevy of vociferous fans on Sunday during his debut for the Woodlands Road club.

The eight goals was the most Adams had ever conceded in senior soccer, although he admitted to allowing as many as 20 in a match during his junior career while at the North Shore club.

"It's only the first game and there's a long road ahead,'' said Adams, who was given little chance by his opponents on at least six of the eight scores.

"We have some good players, it's just a matter of picking up the pieces and moving on.

"We have to take it one game at a time.'' By the end of Sunday's match BAA looked a quilt bereft of most of its patches.

A defence in tatters, the midfield a virtual one-man operation (although another new signee Meshach Wade was the lone shining light), and a forward line as effective as an unloaded rifle, the newest members of the Coca-Cola First Division were hopelessly exposed by their weaknesses by the aggressive Red Devils.

Still, Adams did not feel his side was completely out of their depth, but was critical of his own defence, saying: "I don't think we were totally outplayed, but we didn't mark guys properly, that was our biggest downfall.

"And Village took advantage of every opportunity they got...the marking was just too loose.'' Also taking advantage of every opportunity were many of the Village supporters in attendance, who jeered Adams often.

Asked if he wished he had never left the club which gave him the foundation that has led to his development as Bermuda's best 'keeper, Adams stood firmly by his choice.

"No! It's no sense trying to second guess now. I'm there and have to make the best of the decision I made.

"Like I said, right now it's still early and we're still growing as a unit.

It's a new team with new faces. We have to settle and learn to play for each other and grow stronger together.'' However, Adams will be hoping for a rapid growth period, as the road does not get much easier, with St. George's Colts standing as their next competition followed by Vasco.
