Student Laura top of the class in ladies Match Play
of any of the Island's senior golf tournaments when she clinched the Women's Amateur Match Play title at Mid Ocean Club yesterday.
The 16-year-old, who had to seek permission to skip school in order to play in the week-long event, defeated veteran Shirley Wildi four and three in a 36-hole final in which she never trailed.
Sporting two black eyes, the result of being hit by a golf ball at Belmont last Friday, Robinson never fell behind in any of her matches this week, winning them all by comfortable margins.
She led two-up after 18 holes yesterday and closed out her opponent on the par-five 15th hole.
A 12-handicapper, and a product of the Bermuda Junior Golf Association programme, Robinson attributed her success to solid driving.
"I think I drove straight all week, and that made a big difference,'' she said after yesterday's win. "But I also made the putts when I had to.
"I never really thought I could win when I entered.'' Robinson, whose father Eric caddied for her throughout this week's event, is due to leave BHS at the end of the school year and will head for Gunnery College in Connecticut where she hopes to continue to play.
"I haven't really thought about a career in golf,'' she added. "It would be nice, but at the moment I'm just having a lot of fun.'' Today's 36-hole men's final will be an all-Bermuda affair between two former champions after both Robert Vallis and Tim Carr overcame American opponents in yesterday's semi-finals.
Vallis, who last won in 1992 but hasn't played in the event in recent years, got past fellow scratch handicapper Stan Lee three and two.
And marine police officer Carr, who lifted the title three years ago, defeated Bill Jenks, also three and two.
In the championship consolation final today over 18-holes, dethroned champion Mark Dupuy, beaten by Henry Ascento earlier this week, lines up against American Doug Ballenger, who disposed of another former winner yesterday, Cy Kilgore, five and three.
Dupuy beat Mid Ocean club champion Steve Duxbury one up.
