Students shine at track event

month, set the early pace by winning both the girl's open 800 metres and 1,500 metres during the Primary Schools track and field competition at St. John's field yesterday.

Smith had times of 2:43:20 in the 800 metres and 5:39:43 in the 1,500 metres.

Despite these two fine performances by the Victor Scott student, the champion in the girl's over 11 division was the more active Tiffany Scraders of West Pembroke who captured 16 points after finishing first in the 100 meters (13:33), first in the 200 metres (28:25), third in the 800 metres and second in the long jump.

However the best single showing in the age group was turned in by Sonina Lottimore of Victor Scott who set a new record of 9.18 metres in the triple jump.

Other good performances by a female athlete saw Tamara Scraders, also of West Pembroke, become the champion of the under-11 age group even though she failed to win a single race. She totaled 12 points after finishing second in both the 100 metres and 800 metres and fifth in the 200 metres.

Doreen Burgess of Dellwood was the champion of the under-10 age group with second place finishes in the 800 metres and high jump.

In the boy's over-11 age group Torrick Williams of Heron Bay turned in a championship peformance and gained 19 points.

Williams set a record in the 100 metres with a time of 12:03 seconds and then won the 200 metres in 24:95. He also placed third in the high jump.

But there was another solid performer in the age group with Spencer Butterfield of Saltus, winner of the Primary School Front Street mile this year, finishing first in the 800 metres (2:33:70) and 1,500 metres (5:27:21).

In the boy's under-11 age group Julian Trott of Harrington Sound was the champion totalling 14 points with a victory in the 800 metres (2:42:20), second in the 100 metres and fourth in the 200 metres.

Evan Grant of Port Royal set the only record in the age group when he won the 200 metres in 28:31. He was also first in the 100 metres with a time of 13:16.

Kemar Curtis of Victor Scott was the champion of the under-10 age group after winning the 100 metres in 13:74, second in the high jump and third in the 200 metres.

Close to 150 students represented the 20 participating schools.
