Surprise picks for cricket tour
inclusions in the 14-man Bermuda squad for the trip to Guyana next month for the Shell/Sandals tournament.
The squad, released yesterday by the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control, is missing veteran all-rounders Noel Gibbons and Clevie Wade and opening batsmen Ricky Hill and Dexter Smith.
Allrounder Lionel Cann is serving a suspension, while spinner Del Hollis, like Cann based in Scotland this season, also misses out on selection.
But four promising youngsters -- Glenn Smith, Janeiro Tucker, Kameron Fox and Gregg Foggo -- are all given an opportunity to establish themselves as Bermuda makes their debut in the limited overs competition in the West Indies. Bermuda will play two matches each against Barbados, Guyana and the Windward Islands between October 4-13.
Trott, consistently one of the top wicketkeeper-batsmen in the Island over the last few years, was delighted to hear of his inclusion for his first overseas senior national tour.
"To be totally honest when I found out I was very estatic but I also thoug ht I had done enough this season to warrant selection, so it wasn't a shock per se,'' said the 32-year-old Trott.
The last time Trott represented Bermuda was four years ago against Derbyshire.
With Dean Minors emerging as the number one wicketkeeper, opportunities have been few for others.
"I just thought with Dean there that my chance had gone,'' said Trott. "But now that I have an opportunity I'm really excited about it...and excitement is an understatement.
"I feel my wicketkeeping has been consistent over the last four or five years but it's only been recently -- having been back in Cup Match last year and having had exposure in the top games -- that people will see you.'' The Bailey's Bay vice captain is also a capable early order batsman, usually batting in the top three for his club.
Indications are Clay Smith and Glenn Smith, also chosen for his first overseas senior tour, will open the batting with captain Albert Steede coming in at number three and Charlie Marshall four.
The Smiths did open the batting during a match of the Bermuda tour to England this year when Glenn, then playing for an English amateur club, made an appearance for Bermuda after scoring a century against his country in an earlier match.
The experienced Arnold Manders, the vice captain, and Jeff Richardson w ill battle for places in the middle order while Janeiro Tucker is seen, with Manders, as a the genuine allrounder.
Bermuda's pace attack will be led by Barbados-born pair Roger Blades of Police and Anthony Braithwaite of Bay, with Gregg Foggo of St. George's being the other attack bowler. Foggo made his national team debut in England earlier this year.
In the slow bowling department there are orthodox leg break bowlers Bruce Perinchief of Nationals and St. David's youngster Kameron Fox and Manders with his off-breaks. Tucker will provide the seam bowling.
HAPPY MAN -- Bailey's Bay veteran Roger Trott is thrilled after being a surprise pick for the national squad heading part in the Shell/Sandals tournament in Guyana.
