Swan joint 10th in Florida event
10th in the two-day Continental Open in Wildwood, Florida, yesterday.
Swan, who missed getting amongst the money by two strokes, was one of seven players tied for third place after his opening round of two-under-par 70 on Thursday. His 74 yesterday left him five strokes behind the winner.
The first-day lead was held by Canadian Drew Hart on 67, but American David McCampbell, who was not even in the top 10 following his opening round of 72, came back to shoot 67 yesterday to take top spot by a stroke over Hart who added a 73 yesterday. McCampbell finished with a five-under-par 139 while Swan finished even par on 144.
The tournament attracted 35 competitors.
"I felt pleased with my position after the first day but after getting in position I have to learn to shoot as low as I can because you don't know where the winner is going to come from,'' said Swan yesterday.
"I missed four very easy putts inside five feet today. For me the main thing is I wanted to be competitive and measure my game against my peers to prepare myself for the World Cup.'' Swan will join up with another local pro, Dwayne Pearman, in representing Bermuda in the World Cup, which runs from next Thursday to Sunday.
"My main concentration will be on the putting surface,'' said Swan as he explained his need to work on his short putting game in the next few days.
"My wedging has improved 100 percent, now I've just got to tune up my short putting.
"I feel pretty good, I'm playing well. Playing in the Jamaican Open really helped me. I'm hitting the ball with more confidence. It's great to be at this level again. I'm trying to get myself more and more tournament tough.'' Visiting duo John Fitch and Norman Swenson have amassed an eight-stroke lead after two rounds of the Bermuda Four Ball Championships at Port Royal Golf Club.
Fitch and Swenson carded 67 yesterday to go with a 63 on Thursday and currently head second-place pair Vinny Giles and John McKey, who have a combined score of 138 going into today's third round.
Giles is one of two venerable golfers attracted to the tournament, the other being Downing Gray. Giles is a former winner of the US and British Amateur Championships in 1972 and 1975 respectively. He also represented the US in four Walker Cups and three World Cups.
Gray was a runner-up at the said US event in 1962 as well as being chosen on three occasions to the Walker Cup team.
Locals Henry Ascento and Clyde Burgess stand third on 139.
Meanwhile, Joan Connors and Judithanne Astwood began their championship quest by registering an opening-round 70. They lead Pat Morgan and Ginette Spinucci by three strokes, with Priscilla Bailey and Nancy Black a further four strokes adrift.
