successful first day of the Latin Caribbean Swimming Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Kris Cash, Kevin Insley and Mike Cash all won golds in the 1500 metres freestyle, while Sarah Manuel, Colleen Nelson and Chris Smith all bagged silvers in the same event. Manuel was also best in her age group in the 800 freestyle and second in the 50 breaststroke, while Nelson topped her class in the 200 breaststroke.

Chris Smith was best in his age group in the 200 breaststroke and Insley second best in his class in the same event. Duncan Newby finished fourth in the 800 freestyle.

A severe lightning storm kept swimmers out of the water at one point, lengthening the opening day of the four-day meet.
